Mothers Day Gifts 2019

Fun Questions With The Ladies Of Firebox

Ellie Weston – 8th Mar 2019

We think you should get to know the lovely ladies of Firebox a bit better. And what better occasion for that that International Women’s Day? Say hello to just a few of the fabulous femmes we’re proud to have on our team.

Cara, Head of PR

How long have you worked at Firebox? I’ve been part of the company for over six years, having originally started my foray into PR from an internship a few years prior! After interning, I worked agency side for a few years, before heading back to Firebox. I’ve learnt a lot during my time here, and had the perk of being able to work across a wide variety of quirky product campaigns at the company.

What’s the best thing about working here? The best thing about working here is the people! We are a little Firebox family, and some of us have known each other for years and years, so it’s great to be able to work with people that I would consider friends outside the company.

Favourite Firebox product? Pixie Tears Gin is delicious - it’s elderflower and cucumber flavour and it sparkles. Dreamy!

What advice would you give someone looking to work in your industry? Interning at the start of your career is a great way to try out an industry and gain valuable experience. You will also meet lots of contacts and will often get a broad range of experience in lots of different sectors. Then can choose your favourite sector.

What advice would you give to your younger self? My advice would be to know your worth, and stand up for what you believe in. Also, I would have told myself to wear blue light filtered glasses!

Would you rather have to fight one giant moth, or a million regular sized moths? A million regular moths would be exhausting. Plus, think of all the mess. They’re dusty little creatures. My cat killed one once and wing dust got everywhere. I’d take my chances on the giant moth. I mean… what’s the worst it could do? Blow me away with a gust of its wings? How giant are we talking here anyway?

Who is the woman that inspires you most? Bonus points if it's not your mum. I love the band Khruangbin, and their female bassist Laura Leazy. She's self taught, and picked it up later in life, which gave me the confidence to start learning bass guitar myself aged 30!

Quality Street, Heroes, Celebrations, or Roses? As a choccie connoisseur, I’d go rogue and invent a fusion box, to include The Purple One (QS), The Strawberry One (Roses), The Malteser One ( C ) and the Caramel Ones (H).

Jo, Marketing Team

How long have you worked at Firebox?

1 year 9 months

What’s the best thing about working here?

The dogs. Some days there are as many as 3 dogs chilling / playing around my desk. That’s my kinda work environment. (Also the people obvs, but that goes without saying.)

Favourite Firebox product?

That’s a tricky one… my favourite product that we launched last year was probably the Storm Cloud Weather Predictor. My flat’s full of random Firebox homewares.

What advice would you give someone looking to work in your industry?

Working in a smaller company can give you so much exposure to all marketing channels / campaign strategy and implementation - it’s super motivating to work in an environment where you are constantly testing and learning new things!

Would you rather have cooked spaghetti for hair or no thumbs?

Cooked spaghetti of course - you could just shave it off and wigs could be fun. Plus you’d always be prepared if there was a sudden food shortage.

Would you rather have to fight one giant moth, or a million regular sized moths?

1 giant moth. It would be harder to predict the next move of million tiny moth brains than one giant moth brain.

Quality Street, Heroes, Celebrations, or Roses?

CELEBRATIONS - this is a ridiculous debate

Elise, Trade Account Manager

How long have you worked at Firebox? 8yrs 4months

What’s the worst thing about working here? The fact we aren't all on one floor

If you weren't doing this job, what would you be doing? Selling over priced sports cars or making my own bathtub gin

Would you rather have cooked spaghetti for hair, or no thumbs? Cooked spaghetti - as long as it never cooled. I'll always been warm and it would get that white residue

Would you rather have to fight one giant moth, or a million regular sized moths? NO. Neither! I can't deal. But I guess, gun to my head, the giant one. No hiding from that bad boi.

Jade, Trade Account Manager

How long have you worked at Firebox? 4 and a half years

What’s the best thing about working here? The camaraderie and endless banter.

What advice would you give to your younger self? There are no wrong turns, just feel the fear and do it anyway.

Would you rather have cooked spaghetti for hair or no thumbs? Spaghetti. If it grows back, you'll never go hungry. If it doesn't, you get to wear wigs and change your style everyday.

Would you rather have to fight one giant moth, or a million regular sized moths? A million regular moths 100%, I don't wanna fight a moth the size of Shelob.

Quality Street, Heroes, Celebrations, or Roses? Heroes

Sara, Customer Services

How long have you worked at Firebox?

A year and a half

What’s the best thing about working here?

Having a team that is always happy to see you. And office puppers.

What’s the worst thing about working here?

Having to occasionally listen to bad music.

Favourite Firebox product?

Blobfish slippers

What advice would you give someone looking to work in your industry?

Be creative and don’t be afraid go the extra mile.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t over pluck your eyebrows, they’ll never be the same again!

Who is the woman that inspires you most? Bonus points if it's not your mum.

Michelle Obama - she's totally bad ass and stays true to herself. Such an amazing and progressive role model. Plus her 'Turnip for What' vine is incredible

Would you rather have cooked spaghetti for hair or no thumbs?

The latter - thumbs are overrated

It’s our round at the pub, what do you want?

Fruli strawberry beer

Carolinè, Product Developer

How long have you worked at Firebox? Almost 2 years

What’s the best thing about working here?

All the fun products we get to come up with (like Grow a dick), the sample tastings (chocolate and gin, YUM) and all the amazing people!

What’s the worst thing about working here?

The sample sales - there's so many fun things and you end up spontaneously purchasing like five dick colouring books and have to find somewhere at home to keep them. Or you put them in a box under your desk like Caitlin, until your legs don't fit under your desk anymore…

Favourite Firebox product?

The halloumi kit - you make your own cheese! Truly amazed.

What advice would you give someone looking to work in your industry?

Work hard, be kind and ask questions. When I was a Sales admin at my first job I asked if I could sit in a corner and observe in the design meetings. I took notes of everything they said to learn as much as possible and after a while they started asking for my opinion. I took over the role of Buyer/Product developer a few months later. You gotta be a bit annoying and stubborn.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be patient. No one's got their shit together in their teens or early 20's. (In London no one's got their shit together until they're like 40). And if you're having a shit day, think about what 15 year old you would think of you. I'm sure they'd be very proud of how far you've come.

Who is the woman that inspires you most? Bonus points if it's not your mum. Iris Apfel. There's so much pressure on women to look young and pretty to stay relevant. I like how Iris Apfel is subverting the norm. Society has made us scared to grow old and she makes it look magical. She makes me want to grow old. And she became famous when she was like 80, so it's never too late!

It’s our round at the pub, what do you want?

Literally anything works apart from Whisky. I had a 2 week hangover from that once. Still haven't recovered.

Caitlin, Product Developer

How long have you worked at Firebox? Two years

What’s the best thing about working here? Lots of creative freedom

Favourite Firebox product? The spiritual as fuck yoga mat

What’s the worst thing about working here? I spend too much money on lunch

What advice would you give someone looking to work in your industry? Get organised

What advice would you give to your younger self? Pay more attention in language classes

What’s your favourite band/singer? David Bowie

Would you rather have cooked spaghetti for hair or no thumbs? 100% no thumbs. One of my best friends actually has no thumbs - she’s my idol and a queeeen.

Alison, Finance Director

How long have you worked at Firebox? 17 years

Favourite Firebox product? T-Rex Lamp (I have a dinosaur obsessed 7 year old)

What advice would you give someone looking to work in your industry? Accountancy qualifications are not as useful as practical experience, but can help to prove your skills. Cash flow is your most important thing, especially if your business is super-seasonal, so keep a close eye on that.

What advice would you give to your younger self? Procrastinate less.

Would you rather have to fight one giant moth, or a million regular sized moths? This is hard, I’ve seen a lot of Mothra films and don’t think I could defeat a giant moth, but a million is too many to deal with. So, reluctantly, one giant moth.

It’s our round at the pub, what do you want? Pint of lager. And a G&T chaser.

Love or money? Money (I can’t set up payroll based on love)

Quality Street, Heroes, Celebrations, or Roses? Quality Street, though I’d be in favour of a megamix of them all.
