As the greatest droid in the galaxy R2-D2 was never going to be easy to render in plastic toy form, especially back in 1978. And yet, miraculously, Kenner managed it with great aplomb. Unfortunately, like all the other Star Wars figures, Artoo was too titchy. So thank goodness for the all-new R2-D2 Vintage Kenner Action Figure.
Modelled on the first ever Artoo action figure, this charmingly evocative, limited edition droid stands a far more satisfying 12” tall. Made using digital scans of the classic 3 ¾” plaything that thrilled an entire generation of Star Wars fans, it can’t deliver distress holograms, repair hyperdrives or fire lightsabers from its dome, but at least it supersizes every aspect of the original.
It’s not all about Artoo though, because this astromech droid comes in replica 70s packaging boasting original artwork/photos and a resealable plastic clamshell that allows you to display him in all his retro-boxed glory. Now all you need to do is get busy with your chirrups and beeps. ‘Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease!’
