The period of history referred to as the Middle Ages is not exactly synonymous with fun and games. Rotten food, leeches and dodgy dentistry, yes; frivolity, merriment and jolly japes, no. But it can't all have been doom and gloom, can it? Well no, not if you were a rich and powerful land owner. Medieval property developers were the yuppies of yesteryear and now's your chance to emulate one with Cathedral Classic or Cathedral World.
This award-winning game of competition and rivalry is a masterpiece of medieval strategy. But how can a simple bunch of blocks and buildings be so engrossing? Well, like all the classics Cathedral is easy to learn but difficult to master, a combination that makes it seriously addictive.
In a nutshell Cathedral challenges two players to place as many buildings as possible within the walls of a medieval city. There are two sets (light and dark) of hardwood buildings of various sizes. To begin the game, one player places the cathedral block on the grid of the walled city/playing board. The two players then vie for the remaining land. Your goal is to place your own buildings whilst thwarting your opponent's land-grabbing plans.
If a player can completely surround one of his/her opponent's buildings, that building is removed from the board and the space is gobbled up by a different building. The game ends up resembling a puzzle that must be thoughtfully pieced together. The winner is the player whose unplaced buildings would occupy the least amount of space in the city.
We really can't stress how riveting this innocuous looking little game is. Here at Ye Olde Firebox Manor, Cathedral has reawakened our interest in all things medieval, and we've now taken to playing the game by candlelight accompanied by a little light crumhorn music, whilst feasting on cabbage pottage washed down with barley ale. If all this sounds like your bowl of gruel, get your groats out and order now. Thou knoweth it maketh sense!
The award-winning classic Cathedral game. Strategically placed solid hardwood buildings come together to form your medieval city in this beautifully crafted game.
