Think of Christmas and you immediately think of snow. Unfortunately global warming has all but put paid to the romantic concept of a white Christmas, and most of us now have to make do with the occasional flurry in January.
But even if you're reading this from the frozen wastelands of Siberia with a smug grin on your face, we bet you can't make snow indoors. It melts. And let's face it, you can't beat a dusting of snow for adding a touch of seasonal cheer to your home. Of course you could always buy one of those tins of spray-on snow, but the effect is about as realistic as week-old whipped cream and twice as messy.
So how do you achieve that winter wonderland look without travelling to Narnia or filling your house with talcum powder? Easy, you buy a bag of utterly miraculous Insta-Snow!
Simply pour a tiny amount of Insta-Snow into a cup, add water and before you can say 'I'm dreaming of a white Christmas' the liquid appears to freeze solid and starts to expand like a volcanic slush puppy! The resultant avalanche of fluffy powder looks and feels like real snow. It's even cold to the touch! But be warned: you could well have a mini Matterhorn on your hands as Insta-Snow expands to 100 times its original size!
So how in the name of Santa does Insta-Snow work? Well, from what we understand, it's a newfangled synthetic polymer with super water-absorbing properties, and it's the only faux snow on the market that erupts when water is added.
Non-toxic Insta-Snow is so realistic that it's used by movie makers and indoor snowdomes, but it's also ideal for creating a festive look in your humble abode. Insta-Snow™ is an amazing superabsorbent polymer that turns ordinary water into a fluffy substance that looks like snow. The official name for the fine, white powder is Sodium Polyacrylate. This chemical is better known as the superabsorbent polymer powder hidden in the lining of baby nappies.
So this is the stuff in babies' nappies then?
Not quite - there are several different types of Sodium Polycrylate. When water is added to a nappy, the polymer quickly turns into a gel-like solid. Scientists accidentally created a variation of the nappy polymer that is far more fluffy when it absorbs water. Insta-Snow has a much higher degree of "cross-linking" between the long chains of molecules. This tightly cross-linked network rapidly unfolds when it comes into contact with water which accounts for its greater ability to swell up into a fluffy material.
What's a Polymer - is it dangerous?
The word polymer simply means long chain of molecules ("poly" meaning many and "mer" being a unit or molecule). Sodium Polyacrylate is a non-hazardous substance and is safe to touch and squeeze through your fingers. However, you should always use care when handling chemicals. Do not swallow Insta-Snow, and store in the sealed tub provided away from small children, food and pets. If you do get Insta-Snow in your eyes or mouth, flush with generous amounts of water.
Got it. But how does Insta-Snow actually work?
Insta-Snow soaks up water using the process of osmosis (where water molecules pass through a barrier from one side to another). When water comes in contact with the polymer, it moves from outside the polymer to the inside and causes it to swell. The polymer chains have an elastic quality, but they can stretch only so far and hold so much water - otherwise your container of Insta-Snow would grow as big as a house. Which would be inconvenient.

...Lots! Try:
- Experiment with different ratios of powder to water
- Pour some salt into your "snow" mixture. Within seconds it will appear to "melt" as the salt breaks down the polymer and releases the water.
- Freeze a batch of your "snow" mixture for around 8 hours to make it feel even more realistic!

This is amazing stuff! I bought some as soon as I saw it on Firebox and wasn't disappointed!
I put a teaspoon of the powder into a bag (the firebox air-packaging bubbles are good for this!) and poured in the suggested 2 fl oz of water. For a moment, the powder was flooded and I thought - that's rubbish, that must be too much water. But then, right in front of my eyes - WHOOMPH! Snow! It's incredible!
