Fire is fascinating, isn't it? We could stare at the orangey wobbly stuff for hours. In fact we reckon it's probably our favourite classical element. As Beavis and Butthead used to say, 'Fire rules!' But aside from its mesmerizing aesthetic qualities fire is also rather handy, especially when it comes to lighting things; a screamingly obvious fact, but, judging by the amount of times we're caught short without matches or a lighter, one which few of us seem to pay any attention to.

Turboflame
Maybe that's because lighting things with traditional lighters isn't always as easy as it seems. After all, bog standard lighters are all well and good but they don't really cut the mustard when it's windy. Most of them produce wimpy flames that need to be hand-cupped to stop them blowing out.

Turboflame That's why we were seriously impressed when we first witnessed the powerful Turboflame doing its thing. This chic little portable fire source (okay, so it's a lighter) is an essential piece of kit for anyone who likes to have instantaneous access to a roaring jet of fire. And that means everyone!

Turboflame Resembling something Ripley might use to incinerate aliens (if she was 6 inches tall) the Turboflame produces a powerful 1300°c jet of blue fire that is practically impervious to wind. Think exhaust-pipe of the Batmobile mixed with a blowtorch! Measuring just over 7cm high including its handy safety cap, the Turboflame is small enough to fit on a key ring, and its roaring jet can be locked for continuous use, making it ideal for lighting fires, candles, barbecues or even giving your mini brûlées a quick blast.

Turboflame Refillable using standard lighter gas, the macho-looking Turboflame is built to last and is guaranteed to elicit gasps of amazement from light-cadgers and casual onlookers alike. More than that, it's got hundreds of uses around the home, garden, workshop and campsite. Got a light mate? No, I've got a Turboflame!

  • Wax skis, seal micro-cracks, thaw frozen locks, fuse wires, and other outdoor uses.
Warning:
  • Suitable for adults only, keep away from children.
  • Ignite lighter away from self, others and flammables.
  • Beware of flame which my be invisible in bright light. Actual heat length is longer than visible flame
  • Be sure flame is fully extinguished after use.
  • Turboflame is ideal for ignition and short-duration high intensity heat (1300ºC). If used longer than 15 seconds continuously the tip may become hot and due care should be taken before storage.
  • Never expose to heat above 50ºC (120ºF) or to prolonged sunlight (eg. car dashboard).
  • Contains flammable gas under pressure. Never puncture or put in fire.
Care and Maintenance:
  • For long term reliability of Turboflame it is essential the burner hole – where flame comes out – be kept clean.
  • Objects should be lit at least 1 inch away from burner hole – i.e. In heat of flame and not flame itself.
  • Do not touch burner hole with the tip of a cigarette or other object. This will cause ash/debris to fall in the lighter and clog it up.
  • Keep lighter clean from dust and dirt in pockets.
  • Periodically, blow dust and carbon build up from burner hole using compressed air as follows (compressed air can be purchased from office supply or computer/hardware stores):
    • Place compressed air canister at least 1 inch away from burner hole or damage may occur.
    • Proceed with 3 short bursts of air. Allow lighter to reach room temperature before igniting.
  • When flame gets weak and low it usually indicates gas tanks is empty. At this point bleed and refill lighter (see accompanying instructions for refilling information). Constant adjustment of flame height will cause damage to lighter.
  • If gas tank is still full and flame is still weak or low, turn up flame height adjuster at base of lighter to achieve desired flame height. Never adjust height while flame is on. Do not force adjustment valve, beyond pre-set maximum and minimum levels.
  • Do not set the flame too high. Apart from being dangerous to the user, a very high flame may cause the lighter to malfunction. Lighter will not ignite and a hissing sound will be heard. Lower flame immediately.
  • If flame jumps it usually indicates trapped air in the gas tank. Bleed air and refill lighter.
  • Operate ignition switch slowly with and care. Misfiring usually occurs with fast ignition or flicking lighter on and off.
  • For best performance and longevity of your lighter, only use gas marked 'Triple/Double Refined' or 'Near Zero Impurities'. Impurities in gas may cause carbon build-up and clog the burner.
What to do if your lighter fails to ignite after the first refill, even at the highest setting:
  • If your lighter fails to ignite after the first refill, even at highest setting try the bleed and refill procedure as noted in the instructions or see this FAQ. Make sure the lighter is at room temperature when you are doing the adjustments. If at maximum setting your Turboflame does not produce a forceful flame (or no flame), then try one last thing:

If you have a model with a flame adjustment screw at the bottom, using a 4mm tip flat head screw driver, turn the adjustment screw 1/8 turn at a time Counter Clock Wise BEYOND the first resistance (maximum) setting. Just apply a gentle force while turning the screw, you can go as far as 1/4 to even 1/2 turn beyond what some people may think is the maximum setting (that is just a safety net set up for summer heat when gas pressure is much higher than the cooler days we normally have in the UK). After each 1/8 turn, try ignition and check flame height until desired setting is reached.

visitor avatar It's a very good lighter, very cool but it should be noted that it can't be filled with standard lighter gas; brands such as Swan. You need gas that has near zero impurities: avoid Newport gas as the adaptors don't fit. If you can get a canister of Colibri near zero impurities gas, I would recommend this as it filled my lighter perfectly.
Mark, Aberystwyth - 4th June 2009
visitor avatar I bought the original version of this from Firebox back in 2002 or 2003... I can't remember which, it lasted a long time before the hole got too clogged to work, still haven't got around to repairing it. We used to use it for melting glass, other lighters (nice big fireball when it caught the gas) of course where would I be without my fags? A good few people had missing eyebrows from putting their heads too close to the jet flame of doom! Loved it, tempted to buy another cos my mate managed to melt his....

visitor avatar I got my turbo flame today. I'm a chef and took it to work with me. We all have been having great fun toasting things and melting sugar. Great product, great site. Thanks firebox.
Naomi Hargrave, Bournemouth - 24th September 2007
visitor avatar Ah this is fantastic! As soon as I bought it I started melting the bag of gummy eggs you sent me. With a huge grin on my face!
Jamie Robertson, Dunfermline - 10th August 2007
visitor avatar WOWWEEEE I had one similar except... the lid to it had a mirror built in so you could use it as a torch. {:O.
Steve, - 6th August 2007
visitor avatar Great lighter! ... If you are lighting up for someone else, make sure they don't cup their hands or get too close - you'll burn their face/hands off!!
Chris S, Derby - 23rd July 2007
visitor avatar I got mine sent in next to no time and can tell you this is THE best lighter I've ever used: The blue flame gives it the burning power of at least 5 regular lighters, it looks cool (I got a red one and a chrome one) and it feels great to hold. I don't even smoke, I just got one because it's a useful tool!
Jamie Collins, Surrey, UK - 5th March 2007
visitor avatar This thing is immense. Quick delivery but even quicker flame! A must for anyone wanting to be pyromanically constructively destructive.
Pete, Liverpool - 1st March 2007
visitor avatar Ordered this yesterday and it arrived before 11am, awesome delivery, none better. Within minutes of receiving it I'd set fire to some paper (by mistake of course) and had the whole office smelling the heating units to see where the burning was coming from, classic. Thanks firebox.
Dave, Dagenham - 14th November 2006
visitor avatar I bought this for a music festival to ensure the wind will not stop my fire-lighting attempts. I've tested it out and am really impressed and would definitely recommend this. Firebox were even kind enough to send me free Perplex City cards and some sweets! Thanx guys! :D.
