Mathmos Air Switch 0

NEW Air Switch 0: wall-mounted Air Switch goodness

Lamps are usually about as exciting as, er, lamps. Okay, so there are some exceptions; a $3million Tiffany lamp might possibly tweak our interest, and we wouldn't mind a quick rub on Aladdin's. That said, no lamp has ever got us into as much of a lava (geddit) as the mystifying Air Switch from those clever luminosity-meisters at Mathmos.

This flask-shaped table light looks more like something Igor might hand to Dr Frankenstein following a visit to the loo. But, as self-appointed arbiters of hi-tech fashion, we've decided that laboratory-chic is gonna be big this season. Besides, the Air Switch looks unlike any other lamp around. Eye-catching looks aside, the Air Switch is an incredible innovation in the world of weird and wonderful lamps (yes, there is one - just type 'Mathmos' into the search box on the left), because it is controlled via a mere wave of the hand.

Mathmos Air Switch Lamp

For some unfathomable reason, waving your hand just above the rim of the Air Switch in a gentle, 'These aren't the droids you're looking for' fashion turns it on, whilst brightness is controlled via an up/down, Benny-Hill-slapping-that-bald-bloke-in-slo/mo movement. We really can't overstate how impressive all this is. Just imagine, you get home with your date (romantic, not squishy and fruity) put on some music, casually wave your hand above the Air Switch and instantly give the room a gorgeously ambient glow. If that doesn't impress, nothing will!

Mathmos Air Switch Lamp: Hand motion The Air Switch is ideal for those moments when fumbling around for the light switch is not a viable option. And the feeling of power you get from controlling it in an 'I command you to work'/David Copperfield-fashion is truly stimulating. So why not get your hands on...sorry, wave them above an Air Switch immediately.

Operation

Switch On or Off
  • Switch Airswitch on or off by moving your hand horizontally over the top of the light with a slow purposeful movement.
  • Airswitch is designed to fade on and off.
  • Airswitch will remember the level of light when switched off and back on, even when unplugged.
To Brighten or Dim.
  • Firstly ensure the light is switched on as above.

  • To Brighten:
    • Place your hand above the light source in the invisible beam.
    • To achieve maximum brightness start with you hand approximately 2cm above the lamp and move it slowly upwards to approximately 30cm/1ft from the top of the light, taking care to keep your hand in the beam.

    To Dim:
    • Place your hand directly above the light source in the invisible beam. To dim the light fully start the movement with your hand approx. 30cm from the top of the light and move it slowly downwards towards the top of the light, taking care to keep your hand in the beam.

Trouble shooting:

The light is operating erratically. Possible reasons and solutions;
  • You are moving your hand too quickly or too slowly – Solution: change the speed of your hand.
  • Your hand is moving out of the invisible beam – Solution: Try and stay in the beam.
The light switches on and off immediately. Possible reasons and solutions;
  • There is not the required 1.5 metre clear air above the light. - Solution: move the lamp to a more suitable position in the room.
  • The base is not correctly fitted to the glass – Solution: refit the base.
  • Airswitch is positioned below a lamp or there is too much light in the room – Solution: move the lamp to a more suitable position in the room.
The light does not respond. Possible reasons and solutions;
  • There is too much light in the room causing the light to be confused – Solution: turn off additional lighting or move to a position away from bright lighting.

  • The wrong wattage, shape or style of lamp has been fitted – Solution: Replace with the lamp shown on the base and lamp holder.
The light is slow to respond. Possible reasons and solutions;
  • The light is adjusting to a new room light level – Solution; Wait for 2 minutes and continue use.
  • There is a build up of dust or debris in the lens – Solution: clean the lens as described in the printed instructions.

visitor avatar I bought an air switch last year, it worked temperamentally for about 3 weeks after which time it became less and less reliable. If you want to wave your hands about like an idiot while nothing happens then this is the product for you.

visitor avatar I have not bought one of these yet but I so am! The design in them are really cool I would defiantly advise it it looks so cool at night time.
Joshua Owens, Lazytown - 10th December 2008
visitor avatar I did work experience in year 10 at Mathmos' main warehouse, in Poole and this is amazing how it's made, I was impressed with all the products at mathmos, I got this free and everyone who has seen it and turned it on and off, etc, think it's amazing.
Steve, Poole, Dorset, England - 25th November 2007
visitor avatar Well... utterly amazing! it's so great (and also very useful!!). I had it given to me as a Christmas gift last year and it truly is an awesome present!!! Also a great mind blower for guests as they always have to ask what it is - curiosity gets the better of them in the end! Thanks firebox!

visitor avatar I brought one of these for my mum's birthday and she really liked it. It looks great and it's always something you can use as a talking point when someone comes round! Really easy to use too. I also found myself getting up every five seconds to play with it some more! (think it'll be on my birthday list now :).

visitor avatar I got the mathmos airswitch lamp for Christmas and its great it’s easy to control and looks cool. The noise which is associated with any dimmer switch is very low and can barely be heard. It’s perfect for the following uses. BEDSIDE LAMP as it dims right down so you can check the time on your watch in the middle of the night without blinding yourself. (It remembers how bright it was and turns on again at the same level. ) Also you don’t have to fumble about to find a switch. You just wave your hand over the lamp and it turns on. PARTY / ROMANTIC LIGHTING it has a lovely soft light and can be dimmed to give the perfect atmosphere. It also is a great conversation piece. WATCHING DVDs as it lights up the room in a soft light so you don’t have any nasty reflections on your telly. Much better than sitting in the dark. Its well worth the money especially as it is very practical (and cool).

visitor avatar This product is awesome, I got it to take to uni with me and it just keeps lasting. Gets annoying when theres a breeze though, it switches on!
Matt Jameson, Leicester - 6th October 2005
visitor avatar I bought this as a birthday present for my boyfriend and he loves it! Don't have a clue how it works-but it is truly magic!Absolutely fantastic!
Vicky Yates, Wirral - 26th April 2005
visitor avatar After aquiring one of these, all I can say is 'amazing'. I'm tempted to get a couple more and spread them around the house since they're so easy to control - my only possible complaint is that in dark rooms they can turn on to full brightness a bit quickly and hurt your eyes :( Still, a useful curiosity which has guests playing for ages.
Nick, Leeds, UK - 7th January 2005
visitor avatar Wow, when I saw this on the website I knew I had to have it! And lucky for me I found one wrapped up under the tree on Crimbo Day. It's fantastically great and stupendously marvellous all at the same time, but if that's too much for you then you can wave your hand over it and dim it down to a brilliant or a very good. It's a must have lighting product for every gadget lovers home, or even every room in every gadget levers home!
