more info

Back in the early nineties if you'd have told a gaming geek that one day it would be possible to shoehorn Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Kid Chameleon, Flicky, Altered Beast and Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine into a self-contained joystick that simply plugs into the telly, they would've said that was about as likely as Ross & Rachel getting togther in "Friends" and that thing called the "Internet" taking off.

Sega Mega Drive Classics

Originally launched by Sega in 1989 UK for £190 (and that only included 1 game!), the Mega Drive was the 16-bit machine designed to take the place of Sega's successful Master System unit. However, sales floundered until Sega introduced Sonic The Hedgehog in 1991 and bundled the now-classic game free with the unit. The rest as they say, is history...

Sega Mega Drive Classics

The Mega Drive caused a real stir in the home console market when it launched as it contained an impressive array of onboard hardware. Built around the 16-bit Motorola 68000 processor, the same chip that powered Apple's Macintosh, it was twice as fast the 8-bit chips used in other consoles around at the time.

Sega Mega Drive Classics: Sonic The Hedgehog

The Mega Drive could display up to 64 colours on screen from a 512 colour pallette and featured a separate 8-bit processor dedicated to sound. All of this computing power translated into games with larger and more detailed characters, more complex graphics, faster action and a home games console that could finally compete with the coin-operated machines in the arcades.

Sega Mega Drive Classics

As the name suggests, our new Sega Mega Drive 6-in-1 games unit crams six classic Mega Drive titles into one self-contained plug'n'play console complete with joypad. Just like our best-selling Atari and Namco Classics, this fabulous little box of gaming nostalgia plugs directly into your TV via handy AV cables, and it's so compact you can take it anywhere there's a TV on hand. Which is just about anywhere, let's face it. No swapping games cartridges over, no fuss.

Sega Mega Drive Classics: Golden Axe

As well buying you a trip down memory lane to a time long before the Xbox and PS2, the Megadive 6-in-1 features superb 16-bit graphics and fiendishly addictive gameplay; this is no ten minute wonder and we guarantee you'll be reaching for the Mega Drive 6-in-1 time and time again...

Featured Games
This bundle of six games and controller would have set you back nearly £300 back in the early nineties:

Sonic The Hedgehog
Once voted the World's Most Popular Computer Game, Sonic The Hedgehog was designed as Sega's answer to Nintendo's mascot Mario and was largely responsible for the success of the Mega Drive.

Golden Axe
The classic medieval swordfighting arcade beat-em-up.

Kid Chameleon
The sideways platform game featuring the hero with a split-personality.

Flicky
...Rescue the chickens from the cats!

Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine
Match the coloured beans before they pile up to the top of screen in this addictive puzzle game.

Altered Beast
The first ever Mega Drive game, Altered Beast was bundled free with the Mega Drive until Sonic The Hedgehog was launched in 1991.

Cheat Codes

The Sega Mega Drive 6-in-1 is so faithful that all the original cheat codes still work for the games:

Sonic The Hedgehog
  • Level Select
Press Up, Down, Left, Right on the title screen and you will hear a chime. Hold down A and press start to access the secret level select screen.
  • Debug Mode
Press Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right, C then hold down A and press start. Continue to hold A until the game begins. Screen co-ordinates will appear instead of a score and the number of objects displayed will appearts instead of the time remaining. Use one of the following controller actions to enable the corresponding debug code:
    • Object transformation
Press B to change Sonic into a game sprite. Press A to change the object. Press C to place an object on the screen. Press B again to revert back to being Sonic. Note: the accessible objects changes from level to level
    • Invincibility
Sonic is, by default, invincible - but you will still lose rings if you get hit.
    • Slow Motion
Pause the game and hold B
    • Restart
Pause the game and press A
    • Frame Advance
Pause the game and press C
  • Crazy Sonic
Hold A+B+C during the demo mode to force Sonic to run into objects and act strangely. This also applies during the end sequence after completing the Final Zone.
  • Bonus Points
Complete Green Hill Zone 1-1 or 1-2 in 29 seconds or less to collect 50,000 bonus points

A decent little contraption. It's great to be able to play the classics without having to own a big hulking Sega MegaDrive and all those cables and cartridges. However it does have it's disappointments. Golden Axe, for example, is a great game, but it becomes a real killer when in 2 player co-op mode, but having no second gamepad nor a port to plug one into, this isn't possible. On top of that, the games seem to have been copied straight from a MegaDrive into this little thing, because Kid Chamelion even allows you to select 2 player mode, playing the game exactly as it would if you had launched a 2 player without a second controller. Once you're over that, though, this thing is still great fun. If, like me, your love for the titles such as Golden Axe lie in the multiplayer, then don't bother, and for Sonic pick Sonic Mega Collection or even get a MegaDrive. If, on the other hand, you're a lone axeman and you enjoy to play these games by yourself, it's worth your money and will take up so much less space and cost less than a MegaDrive.

This is a very fun console with six great games. Sonic the Hedgehog is the game that made Sega a legend. It has spawned countless sequels that are still being made and played today after 15 years. Golden Axe is a very addictive game which will definitely keep you playing for hours. Kid Chameleon is a brilliant game that I remember from my childhood. You are a young boy trapped in a video game who has a bizarre split-personality. Flicky is possibly the most addictive game of the lot, very fun indeed. You must run around in a supermarket, gathering chicks before the cats get them. Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was good too, a lively puzzle game that will make time go by. The last is Altered Beast, the first Megadrive game ever, which has even been remade on Playstation 2. It's a great little game, although a bit hard too.

I spent VERY much money and time playing Golden Axe on the arcades. And later on the Amiga. It is still a good game the 6 in one is a good idea. I´d say Golden, Altered beast and Bean Machine would have become even better if there was an extra controller. Definitely worth the money, A lot of hours of gaming fun!
