Wooden with Cork Screw

Cork Screw included!

Drinking wine is one of life's greatest pleasures. Ergo, not being able to open the flippin' bottle is one of life's greatest frustrations. So imagine how exasperating it would be if you couldn't even get at the actual bottle in the first place.

But how could that happen, you ask. Well, quite easily really. All you need is a Don't Break the Bottle puzzle. These fiendish brain bam-booze-lers (see what we've done there?) are ingenious gifts that will amuse and infuriate, depending on whether you're giving or receiving. Simply lock the bottle of your choice in the puzzle's seemingly impenetrable embrace and present to your host/victim.

At first glance, these maddening contraptions appear easy to solve. In fact, recipients may even titter at your thinly-veiled malevolence and applaud your twisted sense of humour. But not for long. After a few failed attempts, they'll be pulling faces worthy of The Hulk trying to do a Rubik Cube. And, as full on dipsomania sets in, they'll be begging for the solution. (Walking out at this point is a seriously good joke).

Wooden with Cork Screw

The wooden base makes a good stand too

As well as being brilliant party gifts, Don't Break the Bottle puzzles are ideal for storing that special bottle of wine when thirsty visitors call. They also make great dinner party offerings, as hosts will be so flummoxed and amused they'll probably overlook the fact that the plonk you've locked inside is el cheapo vino collapso. Best of all hosts won't know whether to thank you or throttle you, making Don't Break the Bottle puzzles perfect gifts for friends and enemies alike. Cheers, chin chin, bottoms up and salute!

Please note:
  • Wine not included
  • The solution to the puzzle is included in the instructions, so if your recipient goes mad with frustration, you can let them know how to solve it. Or not. The choice is yours...
  • The photographs on the Corkscrew and packaging incorrectly show the puzzle. So just follow the instructions and ignore the box image! Don't worry, it's not as hard as it looks, you can see how they're supposed to look here.
  • Corkscrew Edition will only fit bottles with a maximum diameter 3.5" or 8.9cm and 28-33cm tall - enough space for a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin.

press review "An incredibly annoying idea. A difficult game whcih hides a bottle of wine - to get the bottle, you must solve the puzzle."

visitor avatar *HOW TO ADJUST TO FIT SMALLER BOTTLES* As it comes this will only fit correctly on the tallest of wine bottles. To adjust, find the end with the knot (in the cup that goes over the top of the bootle), undo the knot and tie a knot further down the string. Once you've found the correct length you can cut off the excess, and then burn the end with a lighter to tidy it up.
Simon, Newcastle - 23rd December 2011
Firebox says: Thanks Simon, to all those wanting to use this with smaller bottles - take heed!
visitor avatar Have had this since April - was a present for Dad but we couldn't find a bottle to fit. Decided to wait until Christmas, but STILL can't find a bottle tall enough! Every one we try is too small and doesn't work.
Saira, Plymouth - 20th October 2011
Firebox says: This really should fit most standard wine bottle sizes between 28 & 33cm tall with room to spare round the outside. With a diameter capacity of 8.9cm you could even slip in a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. If you're still coming up short you could try slipping some padding in the base or even a small bung in the cap!
visitor avatar Is this likely to come in stock again, any time soon?
Deanne, Martham - 1st June 2010
Firebox says: We're working on it. Once we have a due date it will show next to the Pre Order button at the top of the page.
visitor avatar I've bought the wooden corkscrew edition for a friend as a gift which they solved after much trying. Are the solutions to the other editions the same or will they get as much frustration if I give them a different version of the puzzle?
CC, London - 12th November 2009
Firebox says: Nope, they're all different! The madness continues...
visitor avatar I'd like to give one to a real wine 'expert'. Which is the most difficult for a normal bottle of wine?
Hattie, London - 6th December 2008
Firebox says: You have to be a puzzle expert to solve these puzzles. but each puzzle is different in its own way!
visitor avatar I bought one of these for my father in law for his birthday. He spent all day trying to open it and then cut it because we wouldn't tell him how to do it!
Sarah, Nottingham - 4th December 2008
visitor avatar Ingenius! I got the Corkscrew edition one for my dad for xmas as he is a puzzle buff. I dont think it will take him long to figure out but it sure will be fun. The only problem I can see when setting it up (and I know he will spot this) is that to secure the bottle it has an adjustable cord you simply pull on to adjust for different wine bottles. Maybe the first thing he sees is that ive tied that bit up and he wont touch it to be fair. Only a true wine-o will undo that bit and lift the top off proclaiming it was easy. All in all, a very good gift idea that I would want everyone to enjoy this christmas.
Jack, Sheffield - 6th November 2008
visitor avatar Purchased two of the Champagne models. Had to bend the metal spikes on the bottom to get the bottle to fit(Dom Perignon). One one of the ones I received, the tolerances were off, so you can solve it the easy way(which isn't supposed to work). Clever Idea though, made a good gift.
Jeff, Washington, DC - 20th June 2008
visitor avatar My boyfriend bought this for his Dad's Christmas. After over 6 hours of hideous swearing and shouting he now has a bottle of Port safely trapped inside, and my headache is subsiding! Hope his Dad likes it. Only to be recommended for those with infinite patience, and a ready supply of painkillers!
Maisie, Perth, Scotland - 23rd December 2007
visitor avatar Ive bought the caddy version for an Christmas prezzie - had to try it out as soon as it arrived. Took me a few goes to get it all together but once it's on it's going to be fun watching someone try and get the bottle out! Think I might have to get one of the other designs now!
