Not sure which MP3 Player to get? Check out our handy comparison guide.
Unless you have been living under a rock, in a cave, far underground on a moon orbiting Uranus, you will by now be aware of the iPod, the must have gadget of the year, and arguably of the decade! iPod was the biggest-selling consumer item last Christmas and accounts for a sizable percentage of all MP3 players sold. The reason for this is quite simple: iPods are the best MP3 players in the whole world. And now, Jonathan Ive and the team of genius designers at Apple have brought us the diminutive and exceedingly gorgeous sibling - iPod Mini.
The engineers at Apple somehow managed to squeeze a 4GB hard drive - which can hold 1000 songs - into an anodized aluminium case which is smaller than virtually every mobile phone on earth. The crystal clear 1.67 inch (diagonal) backlit screen is recessed into the case to avoid scratches and displays songs, artists, albums and more. As with its big brother, the iPod Mini offers up to 25 minutes of skip-protection (which makes it ideal for running and other exercise.) The battery life is an extremely respectable 8 hours, so you aren't paying a penalty for all this miniaturization. In fact, all the functionality of the original 5GB iPod has been squeezed into a case which is over 30% smaller. Colour us impressed!
One of the most ingenious solutions in making the iPod mini really, really tiny is the way the acclaimed scroll-wheel has been brilliantly refined and redesigned. The boffins at Apple had the brilliant idea of putting the buttons under the scroll-wheel, now known as a 'click-wheel' - this not only makes the very best use of the limited space available but makes one-handed browsing even easier, quicker and more intuitive than with the original scroll-wheel.
iPod mini is destined to become the ultimate accessory for all clued-in fashionistas, and Apple have cannily made it available in five colours: silver, gold, green, pink or blue. (buy one for each outfit, eh?)
High Fidelity
Designed to give you the best portable digital music experience ever, the iPod delivers the highest sound quality from input to output. iPod supports the most popular audio formats - including MP3 (up to 320 kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and WAV - giving you access to a wide range of audio file types. And iPod is the only portable digital music player that supports the AAC format used by the iTunes Music Store for Mac and Windows. AAC features CD-quality audio in smaller file sizes than MP3, so that even more songs fit on your iPod.
But wait, there's more! So much more. In addition to being a super-fine MP3 player, iPod mini also has many PDA-style functions which allow you to organise your life more efficiently, such as contacts, calendars and to-do lists. You can even download restaurant reviews, news articles and so on to read at your leisure. The built-in alarm allows you to fall asleep or wake up to music, and the four built-in games (Music Quiz, Solitaire, Brick and Parachute) mean you will never be without a much needed distraction when sitting in your dentist's waiting room
iPod mini includes sleek white earbud headphones with a wide frequency response range for high-quality sound. Neodymium drivers make iPod headphones five times more powerful than other headphones, which often use aluminum, cobalt or ceramic drivers. They so distinctive that your fellow commuters will know that you are part of the growing legions of discerning 'pod-people'.
How 'plug-and-play' should be done
No matter whether you use a Windows PC or a Mac, iPod mini and iTunes allow you to synchronize your music and data effortlessly, without having to tweak settings each time you transfer files between your iPod and your computer. It literally couldn't be easier. Simply add new music to iTunes by downloading new music from the web or ripping a CD to MP3 or AAC. Once you plug in your iPod mini, it starts to download these changes. You don't even have to press a button. This seamless integration and ease-of-use is just one more reason why iPods seem to be taking over the world!
Fast and Furious FireWire
1000 songs might sound like a lot, but if you are anything like us you will be wanting to change the music on your iPod mini fairly often. Thanks to blisteringly fast FireWire (or USB 2.0) this needn't be a stressful, time-consuming process. In fact, iPod mini can transfer an entire CD in as little as ten seconds, via it's handy dock connector. In addition, your battery will be recharged each time you connect to your computer - as long as you keep it regularly 'topped-up' you should rarely experience the music-free misery of a dead-battery.
iPod is (almost) universally acclaimed as the finest MP3 player in the world, but it is more than that - it has become a cultural icon and a design classic. iPod owners tend to be overcome with an evangelical fervour when talking about their favourite gadget, and the iPod mini is destined to win a further army of admirers. ive got a 15gb i pod and there amazing everything is so easy 2 use and 2 download tracks on2 it easy. people cant understand u dunt need 2 b hard on the buttons or nowt. buy 1 NOWjames, england - Aug '04
This is an excellent little MP3 player that works well with windows. iTunes (bundled with it) is a fantastic product and now that you can convert existing WMA files to AAC/MP3/WAV etc it makes even more sense to get one! Make sure you disable any security programmes (such as Zone alarm) before connecting your pod to your PC as such applications will cause your computer to crash displaying a 'stop error' screen.Rob, Bristol - Jul '04
I’ve seen the superlatives and general compliments on firebox’s site, but I can add my own now. When the delivery time for iPod minis went back from April to July 2004, firebox sent me an email to say that it would try to source some direct from the US and fulfill orders that way; I was heartened, but a bit sceptical, but now you’ve done it, and I have my iPod mini.
I can’t offer enough praise. Firebox did what other sites can’t do, and you didn’t charge my credit card until the goods were with me. And the delivery charge was risible too. And I have an iPod in advance of UK availability…Life doesn’t get better than this.
I’m a big fan – I’ll be back for more.

I want one of these so much that it's making me thoroughly miserable.Heidi, Newbury, Berkshire - Jun '04
I bought my daughter one from the US as a reward for excellent work at school and was so blown away by it, I then tracked another one down for myself. Without a doubt, the finest gadget I have ever bought. The downside is that now my wife wants one and it is getting slightly expensive!!!Richard Dixon, Stevenage, Herts - Jun '04
Incredible. Simply incredible. I've got a 'plain old' 15GB iPod and iTrip, but one of my mates has just got one of these from the US and.....well, it's just ludicrous! Will Griffin be sizing down the iTrip for this little one too? The mind boggles...Rob, London - May '04
I got one of the early US imports and the attention to detail is truly spectacular. From the moment you slide the box open and see the word 'enjoy' printed on the surface to carefully unwrapping the iPod mini itself you are in awe of how beautiful the designers have made this product. Everyone who has seen it has wanted a go and the touch sensitive clickwheel is a stroke of genius. Most companies cut corners, but Apple go beyond the call of duty - don't know what connection to use? It has USB and FireWire cables both included. Want to charge it up? It can take power from the computer or you can use the universal transformer which is included - it'll accept US and UK voltage as well as everything in between. No plastic here either, it's made in very scratch resistant aluminium. Even the PC connection is a joy to use - plug it in and iTunes will synchronise it all automatically as well as allowing you to sort by artist, album, title, play count, star rating or favourite ice cream flavour. Buy one. Buy one now.Greg, Leeds - Apr '04
AMAZING! I have been using my ipod mini for around a month now. I got it from the US by my girfriend's Mum who went out to visit family. In total my iPod came to £177... bargain - as this included a universal iPod charger and special delivery postage from her home in Cambridge. I am very impressed with the mini. After reading reviews saying that Apple have made a mistake with this one, I dont agree. It is so small and light it fits in to any pocket. I take mine with me everywhere I go, even if its to the local shop for a bottle of milk. The click wheel is perfect. I have used older ipods and the navigation feels more complex with the 4 buttons and scroll wheel. It is very easy to use. I think the 4GB drive is perfect. I have all the tunes I could dream of on there, and still have 1 gig left to play with. It really is one of the most beautiful pieces of hardware I have ever purchased (My Apple G5 takes pole position). From the very moment you remove the plastic wrap on the box letting out a wonderful plastic smell, to opening it up to see all the wonderfully presented extras, you won't regret parting with your cash. Apple have done something very special here. I would say buy one if you are even interested. Sure the £200 price tag over here may put some off, but I think that is a fair price for such a lovely little MP3 player. Either that or go to the States and pick one up there for about £140... You won't regret buying one! All I can say is that I have been prowd to be one of the first people in the UK to have a mini. I am sure you won't regret buying one too. Have fun!Dan, London - Mar '04
I got one throught the post from the states yesterday and it is wicked. It is so small. Plays like a dream.h, London - Mar '04
