"Video games don't affect us, I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids we'd all be running around darkened rooms munching pills and listening to repetitive music".

Back in 1982, if you'd have told a gaming geek that it would one day be possible to shoehorn Pac Man, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Rally-X and Bosconian into a self-contained joystick that simply plugs into the telly, they would've split their slacks laughing, before slipping on some legwarmers and heading off to the nearest roller-disco for a few sodastream mixers.

Namco 5-in-1: Packaging

Amazingly enough, though, that's precisely what boffins have now managed to do! The incredible Namco 5-in-1 Arcade Classics is a gorgeously retro joystick preloaded with five of the greatest video games ever invented: Pac Man, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Rally-X and Bosconian. Well, all right, three of the greatest video games ever invented. That said, Rally-X and Bosconian are equally addictive, and we guarantee that anyone who's old enough to remember Boy George guesting on the A-Team (no, really), or Kevin Keegan coming off his bike on Superstars will remember these coin-op classics the second they start playing.

Namco 5-in-1

This fabulous little box of gaming nostalgia plugs directly into your TV via handy AV cables, and it's so compact you can take it anywhere there's a TV on hand. Which is just about anywhere, let's face it. And it certainly beats lugging around five hulking great arcade cabinets. We love miniaturisation! Despite it's diminutive size, the Namco features an excellent, highly grippable joystick and a sturdy button which will endure no end of frantic mashing - this baby is built to last!

But what of the games themselves, you ask. Well, unless you've just come out of a lengthy cryogenic coma, you'll already know that Pac Man is the most tooth-grindingly addictive, maze-based video game in history. And as for Galaxian - well, the ominous sound FX alone are enough to send shivers of anticipation coursing down the spine before the phantasmagorical aerial bombardment has even begun. And Dig Dug? It's definitely one of our all-time favourites and is absolutely riddled with one-more-go factor; where else do you get to pump up your enemies until they explode?

The lesser known, but equally impressive Rally-X involves a flag-collecting race against time - brilliant in its simplicity and infuriatingly addictive. Last, but by no means least comes Bosconian, an engaging cross between Asteroids and Time Pilot that takes you to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Sort of. We really can't overstate the excitement the Namco 5-in-1 has been generating here at Firebox HQ. In fact, if this doesn't rocket to the top of our best sellers list and cause arcade aficionados to drop to their knees and weep with joy, we'll eat our PS2s!

Namco 5-in-1 TV Games: screenshots

If you really want to recreate the authentic soundscape of an early 80s amusement arcade in your very own living room, head over to the Arcade Ambience Project Page, where you can download Andy Hofle's wonderful MP3s recreations - see how many games you recognise!

High Scores!

Why not send in a screenshot of your high score on Pac-Man (or indeed any of the games)? MAS from London has scored a respectable 28,220 on Pac-Man, but we bet that won't stand for long. If you practise long enough maybe, just maybe you might be the second person in the world to achieve a perfect score of 3,333,360, just like the heroic (and obviously slightly deranged) Billy Mitchell.

Press Reviews...

press review "Without a doubt the finest toy we've seen this year. And an essential purchase for anyone with a love for games."
Boys Toys - Mar '04
press review "...Overly-nostalgic members of the team couldn't hide their excitement at this, an authentically recreated joystick based around Namco's original Pac Man arcade machine."
PC Format - Mar '04
press review "This little box, a Playstation Lite if there ever was one, lives up to the saying that the best ideas are the simplest...it's worth £25 just for PacMan and Galaxian, and Dig Dug is a forgotten masterpiece. Genius"
The Daily Telegraph Weekend - Mar '04
press review A lightweight, all-inclusive controller, the joystick allows gamers to play the five Namco classic games at home by just plugging it into a TV set. The old skool arcade joystick combined with the original graphics and sound makes Namco the most authentic way to relive those retro video games.
The Players' Club - Mar '04
press review Yes, it's another arcade joystick loaded with ye olde retro games. But wait - joy of thumb-aching joys - this one features that loveable pizza-head, Pac-Man. Get munching those pills, kids! Oh, and you get Galaxian, DigDug, Rally-X and Bosconian too.
T3 - Mar '04
press review Pac-Man is great, but don't ignore Bosconian, Rally-X, Galaxian and Dig Dug.
Stuff - Mar '04
press review Last year the Atari 10-in-1, which packaged such vintage games as Pong and Asteroids into a joystick-shaped console, proved immensely popular. But retro gamers had one main grumble: where's Pac-Man? Now, chomping his way into 2004 - some 25 years after his creation - the hungry yellow fellow has returned in the form of the Namco 5-in-1 Games System. An all-inclusive handheld joystick, the Namco simply plugs into your TV for hours of nostalgic fun. Alongside Pac-Man, the lightweight box is preloaded with four other arcade classics: the Space Invaders-like Galaxian, burrowing game Dig Dug, early racing title Rally-X and the addictive Bosconian. But Pac-Man will generate the most excitement and perhaps conquer a whole new generation of gamers.
Web User magazine - Mar '04
press review Retro games are big business - rich 30-somethings pay thousands for refurbished arcade games such as Pac-Man. Almost as authentic - and a lot cheaper - is this 25 quid retro version that plugs straight into your telly, no console required. As well as Pac-Man there are four other games, including Galaxian. It's battery powered, and graphics and sound are equal to the arcade originals, which means a hefty dose of nostalgia anyone over 30 and serious disappointment for their Playstation-reared kids.
Mirrror.co.uk - Mar '04
press review Hot on the heels of the Atari mini-console, the Namco Classic brings more retro arcade gaming into your living room. This system will probably most appeal to people over the age of 25, which is a shame because it's a cheap alternative to a full-blown console for youngsters who just don't appreciate classics.
Daily Record - Mar '04
press review This fabulous box of gaming nostalgia contains all-time classics such as Pac-Man, Galaxian, Dig-Dug, Bosconian and Rally-X in a handy mini-size arcade machine. Simply plug it into your telly and away you go!
Daily Star - Mar '04
press review "Just when you thought the old Atari Joystick couldn't be beat, Namco TV Games reincarnated five video games for play on standard television."
E-gear.com - Feb '04
press review [Namco Classics] plugs straight into your TV for the ultimate in fiendish yet simple gameplay.
Metro - Feb '04
press review Relive your childhood with the Namco 5-in-1 TV Games Joystick...It plugs straight into your TV so you, too can get caught up in the horrifyingly addictive world of the little yellow circle.

visitor avatar Message to the ghosts: why on earth don't you collude to try and catch pac-man? You mince around the maze with your own personal agendas and let countless opportunities to trap the yellow one slip through your phantasmal fingers. Come on chaps, didn't you learn game theory in ghost school?
Sherri, Esher - Feb '04
visitor avatar We got one of these at work 2 months ago and I recently broke it in a frenzied attempt to beat the Bosconian record (currently >200000). Such was the outcry we have ordered another one but many of our staff have suffered for days with no Pac Man and the tension is mounting. The Hi Score holder at PacMan (>60000) has been hit the worst although the fact that Galaxian still works has eased her pain. Dig Dug is the least popular game although I think this is only because it's a bit more complicated and takes a fair bit more skill and cunning than the other ones. 10/10

visitor avatar I was addicted to Pac-Man when I was a teenager in the 1980's. Some 15 years later in 2001 my wife and myself came accross the sit down Pac-Man version in a cafe in San Francisco. We subsequently spent the next couple of hours playing and vowed to buy one for our house in the future. When I came across this product I ordered it immediately and it arrived within a few days. I feel like I am in a time zone back to my youth. Its fantastic - buy it. Galaxians is also superb.
Hammo, Aldridge, UK - Feb '04
visitor avatar Fantastic! These are the real arcade games, graphics, sound, even Bosconian is good! Instead of sticking 10p in the machine, you just press the fire button and get another free game! It looks good, best gadget I've bought in ages.
Josh, Stockport - Feb '04
visitor avatar Spotted this on a US website months back, and finally it's here and it's retrotastic! Pac-Man is as compulsive as ever, and the kids like Rally X, but Galaxians wins it for me: I was transported back to the foyer of the Ipswich Odeon, scrabbling for spare 10p pieces, hoping for one more game before catching the bus.
Ed, Ipswich - Jan '04
visitor avatar As I hoped this is the original arcade version of Pac Man and not the trashy blue screened Atari 2600 version. I cried for weeks when I got that version for Christmas as a kid in 1981. Anyway, I can't overestimate what an amazing product this is. Just buy it - even if you're too young to remember who Pinky, Blinky, Inky and Clyde were.
Si, London - Jan '04
visitor avatar Oh be still my beating heart. Just ordered the Namco 5-in-1 and I can't believe at nearly 40 I have butterflies in my tum waiting for the delivery man. I bought it for my son, don't think he'll get much use from it. I agree with Kath in Glasgow, Pheonix was the biz. Maybe one day we'll get that too.
Gail, Glasgow - Dec '05
visitor avatar I really love Pac Man!!!! It is so addictive!!!! Not just Pac Man, I really love playing the other games too, especially Dig Dug and Rally-X! Fabulous!!
Mary, London - Mar '05
visitor avatar I am so amazed at the plug&play Pac Man. I was the local Champion in a Pac-Man tournament in 1980 with a high score of 413,000. I can't believe the same patterns work as the old arcade stand-up did. AWSOME!!
Kevin, Ohio - Dec '04
visitor avatar I bought one for my 7 year old niece. 2 days later, on her birthday she opened her box to find a doll inside. The 5-in-1 joystick is now resting on top in my TV :) AMAZING!
