In the beginning there was mono. Then there was stereo. And then, along came quadraphonic. But that flopped, so we went back to stereo. And that's pretty much the way it stayed until the recent technological revolution brought us the awesome auditory delights of 5.1 Surround Sound, a cinema-like audio experience that's taken the world by storm. Indeed, 'listen, the bullets are all around you' has become the mantra of practically every 5.1-owning braggard tech-head in recent years. Whether it's Avatar on BluRay, Daft Punk on your iPod or World of Warcraft on PC, 5.1 Surround Sound has become a must-have accessory for any self-respecting audiophile.

The only problem is, how do you listen to your favourite sounds in glorious 5.1 without incurring the wrath of your neighbours and housemates? The answer, good people, lies within the softly padded confines of the incredible Medusa NX USB 5.1 Surround Sound PC Gaming Headset. Forget stereo 'phones, the Medusa gives you the full, spine-tingling, all-encompassing 5.1 surround sound experience.

Basically, three speakers and a subwoofer have been ingeniously shoehorned into each comfortably padded, swivelling ear pad, thus enabling reproduction of the full sound spectrum. With a nifty controller integrated into the cable, you can adjust the sound to suit your individual preferences. Separate controls for rear, front and centre allow you to precisely balance the volume. An amplifier box allows connection to any 5.1 sound source with integrated decoder and also controls the master volume.

These ultra bombastic babies really come into their own when the subwoofers are cranked up - all round clarity is truly staggering: explosions sound bigger, guitars sound badder and bullets sound, well, plain scary. Immersive audio experiences don't get much better than this. We said, 'IMMERSIVE AUDIO EXPERIENCES DON'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS!'

visitor avatar I've had my set now for more than 3 years, and whilst they wont replace a full 5. 1 speaker setup, they do indeed work very effectively and feel the part soundwise. Only downside really is the preamp can be a tad noisy when audio input is quiet - not a huge issue unless you are listening to music with a lot of quiet passages. Talking of music use, these are something else when used for music - plug in the two-channel patch, and plug into a stereo source and just listen to what can only be described as having a pair of full range multi-driver speakers hanging off your head (sound wise, not weight). In fact, i'd say these are worth trying to find now just for the audio experience with music in stereo use. In fact, that's what my set mostly got used for and still do. Without the preamp, you can put them straight into a line-out from device and use the onboard level adjusts to balance the level across the drivers. That said, in two-channel use, you can adjust the levels to balance between front and rear as well as centre and sub - and at the same time with f/r balancing, de-centre the audio losing the 'centre of the head' effect and hearing the sound in a sense of space like a good speaker setup. Still going strong - which is more than can be said for some of the equally and more pricey 'audiophile' stuff.

visitor avatar Well its all been said before, but WOW this is a great headset. Spend a little time tweaking the volume for front, rear and Centre/Sub and its fantastic!

visitor avatar What can I say that hasnt been said? These kick serious a$$ and are worth every penny. I have some Sony's that the Medusa totally smokes and Sennheissers that sound very good but are only stereo. I would recommend with no reservations.

visitor avatar They are VERY good for gaming - nobody sneaks up on me, I hear every footstep and shell case drop, and can tell instinctivly the exact direction it was from.

visitor avatar My friend had told me about these headphones and I needed a pair anyway (neighbours complaining). Anyway i got these and they are amazing, I play Counterstrike:source with them now and I alway know where the enemy is coming from down to a tee. (So well in fact people started accusing me of wall hacking i.e. see through the walls). The Mic is excellent as well. I definetely recommend them for the ultimate gaming experience!!!

visitor avatar In a word, Spectacular. After a little bit of faffing about with the settings, they're an absolute treat on the ears. They manage to be big without being clunky or in the way, and are surprisingly light for their size. I use them for long sessions on Eve Online, and even after hours they're still comfortable, not close and sweaty like some headphones can be. I'm pleased to report that the mic is just as good as the 'phones, and make voice-comms much clearer and easier.

visitor avatar Amazing! No other way to say it. I received my Medusa 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones only 5 days after they were shipped half way around the world! Half Life2 sounds incredible and Doom3 became a whole new game! These headphones ended up beyond my expectations. Easy to set up, feel wonderful on, the packaging is way over the top, and the sound is amazing.

visitor avatar I have received my set today and they do not disappoint. Build quality is great and the sound reproduction is very impressive. Given the number of speakers shoehorned into these babies, they are not heavy at all - they sit on your head/ears very comfortably. Great kit but the packaging belongs in Ann Summers – get some and you’ll know what I mean.

visitor avatar This is a great headset. At first I found myself a bit frustrated while trying to set them up and felt like I imagine Samir (from the movie Office Space) to have felt when he is stuck in traffic at the beginning of the movie. However after a bit of working on them and a few “honey can you take out the trash?” requests, I am very pleased.
The good:
1. I really like that I can use them on my computer, MD player and for my VOIP phone (laptop).
2. The mic is very handy. I took them to work and used an IP phone. Most people said they were able to hear me more clearly than with the standard headset I normally use.
3. I played doom3 with them and I need a change of boxers and a Dr. that can help with the emotional scaring its left.
4. The sound. Once tweaked the way I wanted it I found it to be very balanced with great direction. You can really tell where that stupid spider is coming from in Doom3
The bad:
1. It's got a sub. However if you are not listening to something in 5.1 nothing goes to that channel if you have it hooked through the amp. This was where most of my frustration came from. However after some research I found the “LFE crossover” feature my sound card has. I set it to 80Hrz (the setting THX recommends) and now it sounds great on non 5.1 audio also.
2. An explanation of the above in the instruction manual would have been nice.
3. No mute button for the mic.
4. There is a master volume control on the amp but if you are listening to a CD player or something (without the amp) you have to turn all 3 volume controls down... or up.
All and all I think this is a great headset. Take the time to get it all set up. It's worth it.
