What with vegetarianism becoming rather passé in recent years, the race has been hotting up to find increasingly exotic fare for carnivores. Because let's face it, beef has been beset with problems of late, whilst chicken now costs an arm (or should that be wing?) and a leg, as canny supermarket bosses have cottoned on to the fact that poultry is now the tofu of choice for pretend vegans everywhere.

Reindeer

With this in mind, our good friends at Edible have been busy scouring the world for alternative forms of flesh for you to drool over. And strangely enough, it was in Sweden - the land of Abba, 'special interest' films and Volvos - that they discovered their latest delicious offering.

A Sami Woman, yesterday

Reindeer Paté is, as you might have guessed, paté made from Reindeer meat, which has one of the lowest fat content of any red meats - a mere 2%. The Reindeer are farmed by Sami herdsman and live on a healthy (if somewhat bland) diet of moss and lichen. Nobody ever heard of mad reindeer disease.

And before any of you guilt-ridden moaning minnies start harping on about how cute Reindeer are, take a long hard look at Babe, Larry the Lamb and Foghorn Leghorn, and then reconsider your position.

visitor avatar Just sampling this marvellous product while looking out of the lounge window, on our farm in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. This pate's absolutely delicate taste appeals to the senses and gives that warm Nordic glow. My wife disagrees, however, and says that ostrich is leaner and has elected to prepare ostrich pate for this evening's hors d'oevres. Superb, sampling the remainder of this true Nordic delight while watching my wife hurtling back and forth across the garden standing on our neighbour's ostrich trying to deliver a quiet coup de grace with the tin-opener and a mostly empty bottle of Aquivit. It's moments like these, that make you realise just how very good it is to be alive.

visitor avatar This product looks fantastic, and so unique! I am definitely planning on buying this for my parents christmas hamper - compared to the normal pates and jam combinations its sure to go down fantastically especially with all the other novelty christmas things I can get my hands on... Just one question though, does it need to be refrigerated before opened?! So I know hows best to hide it from the 'rentals?
Bee, South - Oct '09
Firebox says: No it doesn't need to be refrigerated.

visitor avatar The time has come to help endangered races like the Saami (the Scandinavian snowforests they depend on are being mercilessly felled to make toilet rolls, nose wipes etc!). I have bought this product out of solidarity with the Saami people, one of Europe's finest. I devoured the pate on Christmas day (starter meal with brown toast and salad), and found it absolutely delicious!

visitor avatar What a good idea for a real original idea for a christmas meal! Dont tell the little children or they may think the man won't come.
