Ah the Silver Age, an halcyon era for comic books when DC decided to branch out from their horror and crime roots and explore bold new directions in an attempt to rejuvenate their character-base. Essentially this lead to highly imaginative (insane) scientific explanations for where most of their super powers came from.
"Reboots" are all the rage now, but this chunky volume documents the early evolution of all our favourite superheroes – Superman, Hawkman and the Green Lantern to name but a few. As well as the introduction of countless classic renegades such as Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man, the Blue Beetle and The Hand from Beyond.
More than 400 pages rammed full of thousands of covers, hand-picked excerpts, photos and film stills, and like all exemplary coffee table books it is magnificently presented and reassuringly hefty.
Super powers not included, though a simple lab accident should do the trick.
