There was a time not that long ago when we shunned headphones and earbuds – and instead played our favourite music right out in the open, to anyone with the good taste to listen. Back then, we called them ‘boomboxes’. And if we weren’t shopping for braces or spinning on our head we were lugging them from our bedrooms to the park and everywhere in between. Well, with the 1980’s in the midst of a renaissance it’s about time the ghetto blaster got a wash and brush up as well.

And we’re pleased to announce the iHome iP4 Boombox has done it with style. Packing all the functionality of a modern iPod dock into the classic styling of a boombox, it’s a veritable love letter to the 1980’s. But don’t go thinking this is some nostalgic flight of fancy. The chrome and flashing lights of its ancestors have been replaced by a stylish grey (or vibrant pink) rubberised texture and an adjustable LCD equaliser – planting its big rectangular foot firmly in the now.

Just slip your Apple gadget into the space where the cassette deck ought to be (Google it, kids) and slide down the cover to hold it in place. Then crank up your tunes! Play, pause, skip tracks or adjust the volume from across the room with the magnetic remote, or use the iPhone’s touchscreen directly. With five adjustable equaliser sliders on the body of the iP4 you can tailor a look that shouts you. Which reminds us, we haven’t mentioned the speakers yet.

A fitting tribute to the mighty ghetto blasters of yesteryear, the iP4 boasts 4” carbon composite woofers and 1” dome tweeters, all powered by a class D amplifier. Which, for non technical types, means a crystal clear sound with enough oomph to send a ripple through your parachute pants.
