Frequently Asked Questions:

I have installed a CompactFlash Card into my Pocket DV3 and when I switch on the camera, I get a message saying "Please wait".
Occasionally there are compatibility problems with CompactFlash memory cards and digital cameras. The following cards have been tested and are compatible with the Pocket DV3:
  • Transcend
  • HP
  • PQI
  • PRETEC
  • Sandisk
  • Toshiba
  • Lexar
  • Dane-Elec (but only the type sold by Firebox.com - other retailers Dane-Elec cards may not be compatible with this product)
...and you can of course buy compatible CompactFlash cards from Firebox.com!

When buying a CompactFlash card, I was asked if I wanted a "Type I" card or "Type II" card. Which type does the Pocket DV3 Camera use?
The Pocket DV3 uses "Type I" CompactFlash (CF) cards. Type I cards are thinner than Type II cards and so Type II cards physically won't fit into a DV3!

How much video can I record with extra CompactFlash cards?
Approximate storage capacities:
  • 32MB CF Card - approx 5-8 mins
  • 64MB CF Card - approx 10-16 mins
  • 128MB CF Card - approx 20-32 mins
  • 256MB CF Card - approx 40-64 mins
  • 512MB CF Card - approx 80-128 mins
(Unfortunately we can't be more precise as the amount of video you can record depends on what is actually being filmed).

My Pocket DV3 Camera is getting through batteries quicker than I had anticipated! Do you have any suggestions on how to improve battery life?
While the batteries are in the camera, a small amount of charge is being used by the Camera, even when the Camera has switched itself into Standby mode. If the batteries run out, or are removed from the Camera, all photographs, video clips and sound recordings will be lost - unless you have a CompactFlash Memory Card installed. We suggest that you use a CompactFlash Card or upload your photographs, video clips and sound recordings to your PC as soon as possible. If you are not using your Camera, and you have no pictures in your Camera, then we suggest you remove the batteries until you next wish to use the Camera. You can turn off the LCD monitor using the switch located above the instruction sticker on the side of the DV3. NB. While the Camera is connected to your PC via the USB cable, the Camera is drawing it's power from the PC.

Can I use rechargeable batteries in my Pocket DV3 Digital Video Camera?
The Pocket DV3 Camera needs 1.2-1.5 volt AA batteries. You can use rechargeable batteries that state on the batteries that they supply 1.2-1.5 volts.

Can I connect my Pocket DV3 Camera into my Video Recorder so I can record onto a VHS Video tape?
The A/V cable that comes with the Pocket DV3 has a "Composite Video" plug output. If your Video Recorder has a Composite Video socket input, then you can record your Pocket DV3 movies onto a VHS tape. Please read the documentation that came with your Video recorder to see whether it has a Composite Video input socket.

Can I edit video taken with the DV3 using Adobe Premiere?
Yes - but you need to convert the file format first. The DV3 compresses video that you shoot using onboard software - this means that you're able to shoot more video than you would otherwise but it also means that some video editors (like Adobe Premiere) can't edit them in the native format. However, you can download a FREE software program called VirtualDub which will let you convert videos shot with the DV3 to uncompressed AVI files. You can then edit them using applications such as (Adobe Premiere) and splice together your movies, add captions, credits, effects, music soundtracks, etc.

visitor avatar This was my first, and certainly not my last, purchase on Firebox. Wow, what a great product! Awesome still picture quality and great video. I am already building up an archive of video clips on my PC. I love the media editing software which comes bundled with the DV3. I am especially pleased to see that the sound recording quality has greatly improved compared to its predecessors. A flash would do wonders for it but, considering all the features, it is definitely the most value for money camcorder available.

visitor avatar First of all, go out the door and buy this thing. Ready? Ok? Ok, now open the box and be amazed at this little camera. I know it looks cheap - the new DV4 looks a lot better. I was amazed at all the things I can do, as soon as I got it I started taking videos. Great color and not as choppy as I thought they would be. The photos though are amazing!!! Beautiful detail that even betters my digital 1.3 pixel camera. I can tape videos inside with little light. I only wish the menu thing was not dependent on a spring volume type control. I wonder how long it will last. Another thing the sound it makes when you open it is too loud. I wish there was a on/off switch to turn it on instead of the opening thing. I got a camera carrying bag - the smallest one - and I still have room left for a compact flash. I had a couple of CF cards lying around from my iPaq and works great. After I take videos I don't have to hook the camera up, I just take the cf card out and insert it in my DV3000 and use Ulead6 software to edit my videos which is pretty much the same software that comes with the camera. I love how you can add transition effects between scenes and really edit your movies. I buy a lot of electronic toys and believe me after the original blue Sony Walkman I bought, this toy is just as exciting. I own a Hi8 small video camera but feels like a brick compared to my dv3000 which is always inside the holster very handy when I need to take a photo. I'm an architect so I often take photos of details and homes and plants. Best money I ever spent, and the price around $140.00 is a steal! I'm getting the DV4 - I wonder if I will miss the AA battery setup. They're so easy to get, besides mine's still running on the original set of batteries! Buy it!

visitor avatar The Pocket DV 3100 is simply superb. The quality you get is great, better than any camera I have had before. I have shot some really good stuff with it. Recommended buy!!!!
Neil Herbert, Medway, England - Feb '04
visitor avatar Goodness, this camera can produce very sharp images at such a reasonable prize! Wonderful!
Luke, London - Feb '04
visitor avatar Got the DV3 for x-mas and I love it, the still images are a lot better than I thought and the video is very fun, and good enough to view on a TV. The software is nice and easy to use, and so is the web cam mode. I did have to get it swapped because it kept turning itself on, but it's fine now thanks to Firebox's fast service. The Xmas gift box was also very nice - I used the £5 voucher to buy some Thinking Putty and the sweets were yummy. This was my first and certainly not my last product from Firebox. Thanks for the fast service.

visitor avatar I love my new present. I'm new to the UK and now for the next year I can explore London and keep all the memories. Your site is pretty cool too - I have to make your video of the week and get creative - any tips?

The Return
I got one of these a few years back and they're great! Anyway, this is a video I made quite a while ago and as you've got the camera I made it with back, I figured you might like it, I hope you do anyway!
