Puck me! Look at these miniature hockey players go!

Cheeky Swedes. They've been playing Play Off Ice Hockey for donkey's years (where 'donkey's' equals 43) but didn't think once to tell the rest of us how great it was. It turns out that their hidden gem is not only a great laugh to play, but also it accurately represents the sport it's based on better than any other sports game we've played. And it does so without sacrificing the playability, which is crucial.

Don't let the age thing put you off, as this is no dusty curio of a sports board game kept alive by a handful of Scandinavian hobbyists. Play Off is a fast and skilful game, one that doesn't suffer from the stop-start syndrome on display in lots of other games. Plus, it's dead easy. Just score more goals than the other guy and you will be champ.

The play table

the layout

Each team has six movable players

The players move up and down their designated grooves and can turn full circle on the spot. Controlling your team requires a bit more finesse than simply grabbing at the handles and giving them a hearty spin - as you do in the table football manner - but there's nothing fiddly about Play Off.

We were slightly worried that it wouldn't stand up to a bit of rough-and-ready play, but daily tournaments in the boardroom (and trips to parties) with our copy of the game have yet to cause any kind of damage. Apart from that to our work rate.

My mates and I have had so many hours of fun playing table hockey, thought you like might to see one of our games in action! Look out for the goal shot by the defensemen, towards the end of game, a rocket into the top corner!

Press Reviews...

press review Table football is old news; the new way to solve office disputes these days is with an ice hockey table. Use the metal rods to control the players and slot a few past the guy from the post room. Pucking brilliant.

visitor avatar OK, I never review any of my purchases, like, ever. But I was compelled to submit one for this awesome Hockey game due to the fact that it's AWESOME! That's a lot of awesomeness. Had an absolute blast playing with family and it'll be great over Crimbo. It's refreshing to find a fast fun game that doesn't need batteries or plugging into a TV (I have plenty of those believe me!). Quality purchase. Thanks Firebox.
Gav Norton, Sheffield - 16th December 2010
visitor avatar I'm addicted to this game. It's also fun measuring your skills against the best in the world. Will there be an UK team at the World Championships in Riga in June 2005?
Magnus, Sweden - 21st January 2005
visitor avatar I was looking for a game to set up in the office - (www.capitate.co.uk). I used to have a game like this when I was a kid in Toronto - so I already knew it was going to be a hit. And that I would be better than everyone else - Mwahahaha!
Jack, Scotland - 15th October 2004
visitor avatar Just great fun! I'm an Ice Hockey fan myself, and it is much more like the real thing than I anticipated. The girlfriend and i play it non-stop (though I have to let her win!)
El Daveo, Edinbrugh - 20th June 2004
visitor avatar I've been playing Stiga for 15 years, and from my perspective it is THE GAME! Being bred on canadian games as a child, there was a sudden jolt in july 1987, as the main table hockey game maker in Canada shut down its factory in Montreal, so I was a firsthand witness to the decline of the Canadian game. Others found another "big" game, but that died down, as the faithful now play Stiga... there are only a handful who still play on older games, but the face of table hockey changed when Stiga was finally introduced to Canada. Of course you should prepare your game accordingly, mostly with silicone spray on the cogwheels and tracks. One tip I should pass to you: on the left wing joint only spray the track; too much silicone spray may cause the spring to come loose! And as I write this, Stiga table hockey is played in more countries worldwide! When the table hockey world decided to unite in Stockholm, Sweden 15 years ago, never did we think it would become this big... Have fun playing the game!

visitor avatar This game is absolutely awesome and I still haven't found a person who doesn't like it. Forget table football because this is more skillfull, more entertaining, and overall more fun. Well worth the money.
Ste, Cumbria, England - 24th March 2004
visitor avatar This game is so popular here in Sweden, that Stiga has produced some teams that look just like the teams in the real Swedish league: Elitserien.
Erik, Sweden - 22nd March 2004
visitor avatar I got this today for my 34th birthday from my awesome girlfriend. IT IS GREAT! Coming from Canada I had various versions of this as a kid (well a younger kid), and this one is super! Particularly as she also got me team Canada and the score in the first game was 9-0... hmmmm I don't think she let me win... :) I can see many, many, many re-matches!
Scootter, Sawtry - 16th May 2003
visitor avatar Originally bought this in Sweden in 1980. There was a deluxe version with a light that came on whenever a goal was scored but that seems to no longer be available. It is the best game ever for playing with up to six people after a good evening in the pub. There's now a safety screen behind the goal which removes the early version's danger of a puck in the eye.
Alistair Burns, Great Totham - 29th April 2003
visitor avatar I've had one of these for many years, and I have one really good tip; Put some potato flour on the ice. It really increases the speed.
