Clip this little gizmo to your belt, carry it in your pocket, or clutch it in your hand when you’re walking or running. It will measure not just your steps, but the rough distance that you’ve covered and the calories you’ve burned as well. Great for monitoring your exercise programme (or justifying a biscuit afterwards). But it’s the alarm function that puts this one step ahead of the competition.

If you find yourself in an emergency, press the button on the top and the device will emit a shrill 130 decibel alarm. Enough to grab the attention of passers-by, or ward off any unwanted attention. And if you set it off by accident, don’t worry. It’s perfectly easy to switch off again – if you know how. Although you’ll hopefully never need it, it’s a great way to put your mind at ease if you’re exercising alone, or travelling at night.
