worms on fingertip

Mmm BBQ worms

Crisps, popcorn, peanuts, crickets, mealworms. Hold the trolley... crickets and mealworms? What in Bellamy’s back garden is going on?! As it happens, here in the UK we’re a bit behind the times when it comes to snacking. In fact, our South East Asian cousins have been dining out on Insect Snacks for years. And now you can too.

Considered by many carnivorous connoisseurs as a tasty and healthy alternative to fatty crisps and salty nuts, these well-fed farm-raised insects certainly make a change. Choose from crunchy baked crickets with Thai green curry seasoning, or delicious baked BBQ mealworms. Those well-travelled enough to give them a try here at Firebox HQ say they taste a bit like popcorn. But then, they’d say anything to make us eat some too...

detail of crickets

How about a crispy cricket?

Try them for yourself, you might be pleasantly surprised. Otherwise, they make a great gift for the picky eater (or human dustbin) in your life. And since they’re baked and not fried they’re genuinely better for you than wolfing down a bag of crisps. Bon appetit!

Customer Reviews

I wish I'd seen these review before I ordered (new site doesn't display them by default!) as I would have tried to find out more detail on the size, these packets are 6x5CM!! The review that says they are less than a teaspoon is spot on, such a shame as I've always been so pleased with Firebox in the past! I bought these at the reduced price due to the short window with a view to providing them as snacks at a Halloween party, but even with the discount they seem overpriced! :(.

Firebox says: Sorry to hear you were so disappointed Simon, we do try and make it as clear as possible on the site. However, drop us a line with your order number and some more details about the problems you've faced and we will try and get these issues cleared up for you!
I too am immensely disappointed. The product is so small they even sent them with some cola bottles to pack out the parcel. they are tiny. I am going to ask for a refund as the joke is too expensive in my opinion for the price. The website doesn't make it clear how small these packets are. Really not worth it.
Emily O - 15th June 2012
Firebox says: Hey Emily, we do try our best to not misrepresent the products on our website but we do agree that we could have been a little clearer in this instance. We send out little bags of sweets with all our orders so please rest assured that we weren't trying to overcompensate for something! If you could drop us an email to and we'll see what we can do to make this right for you.
I just got my bbq worms and crickets. And I was expecting them to be small which I dont mind as its a sort of one off thing (i dont expect to be eating a worm for lunch everyday)! so price is not the issue I have, my problem is they were crushed! almost 2 bags of powder I am really disapointed. I love firebox and its not totally their fault but perhaps they should have been supplied in a small box rather than a bubble envelope. Sorry firebox not happy.
Mariessa - 8th June 2012
Firebox says: Hey Mariessa, I can see this has now been resolved for you, so fingers crossed the replacements arrive in perfect condition this time!
When I received my Meal worms and Crickets I was extremely disappointed in what I had received. As there is barley any meal worms or crickets and the packets are tiny, which is not good for money. I am really ashamed!
Jadon Mayhew - 10th January 2012
Firebox says: Hi Jadon, I am really sorry to hear that, please feel free to contact us on and we can see if we can help you!
The packets were tiny and the mealworms were all crushed dissapointed I must say.
GEORGE - 28th December 2011
Firebox says: Hi George, Well, No one likes crushed meal worms! Give us a shout on and we can try and sort you out!
I'm not sure if the image has changed since the complaints, but I got about as much as I expected. Sure, the packet's small, and it's fairly pricey, but all novelty items are. If you're buying these hoping for them to be a daily snack for your lunch-box then you will be disappointed. If they're a gift for someone however, you'll get about 7-8 crickets about 1. 5-2cm long, and more mealworms than I can count without opening the packet (at least 30?). Small? Maybe. Worth it for a squeamish friend or sister? Definitely.
