worms on fingertip

Mmm BBQ worms

Crisps, popcorn, peanuts, crickets, mealworms. Hold the trolley... crickets and mealworms? What in Bellamy’s back garden is going on?! As it happens, here in the UK we’re a bit behind the times when it comes to snacking. In fact, our South East Asian cousins have been dining out on Insect Snacks for years. And now you can too.

Considered by many carnivorous connoisseurs as a tasty and healthy alternative to fatty crisps and salty nuts, these well-fed farm-raised insects certainly make a change. Choose from crunchy baked crickets with Thai green curry seasoning, or delicious baked BBQ mealworms. Those well-travelled enough to give them a try here at Firebox HQ say they taste a bit like popcorn. But then, they’d say anything to make us eat some too...

detail of crickets

How about a crispy cricket?

Try them for yourself, you might be pleasantly surprised. Otherwise, they make a great gift for the picky eater (or human dustbin) in your life. And since they’re baked and not fried they’re genuinely better for you than wolfing down a bag of crisps. Bon appetit!

It is smooth and has an odd taste to it. But overall quite nice and a good new snack!

Visitor Reviews...

visitor avatar When I received my Meal worms and Crickets I was extremely disappointed in what I had received. As there is barley any meal worms or crickets and the packets are tiny, which is not good for money. I am really ashamed!

visitor avatar The packets were tiny and the mealworms were all crushed dissapointed I must say.
GEORGE, Chester-le-street - 28th December 2011
Firebox says: Hi George, Well, No one likes crushed meal worms! Give us a shout on info@firebox.com and we can try and sort you out!
visitor avatar I'm not sure if the image has changed since the complaints, but I got about as much as I expected. Sure, the packet's small, and it's fairly pricey, but all novelty items are. If you're buying these hoping for them to be a daily snack for your lunch-box then you will be disappointed. If they're a gift for someone however, you'll get about 7-8 crickets about 1. 5-2cm long, and more mealworms than I can count without opening the packet (at least 30?). Small? Maybe. Worth it for a squeamish friend or sister? Definitely.
Tristain, Harrogate - 15th December 2011
visitor avatar These are tiny! I'm really disappointed in the size, barely a teaspoon in each packet.

visitor avatar Really small packets for the price...but still a rather interesting present for my Uncle.
Sarah, Nottingham - 4th November 2011
visitor avatar 3/10. These snacks are unusual and tasty but they must break records for being the most expensive snacks in the UK. The snacks are in sachets 6 x. 5 cms in size and contain about a teaspoonful of food, not even a mouthful! I'll bet that, in the Far East one could obtain a large SACK of the snack for the price I paid for these tiny tasters here in England!
Sparafucilesmith, Somerset - 1st November 2011
Firebox says: Hi there, we're sorry you feel that way about the price. We always do our best to represent our products accurately and offer as fair a price as we can, so that our customers are free to make their own decisions about whether it's worth it or not.
visitor avatar The packets are rather tiny but they are so brilliant, waiting for Christmas so I can try one =).
