animation of My Butterfly in action

Tap the top to start the flutter

Remember those lazy summer days spent trapping butterflies in jars? Course you don’t. You were too busy playing video games and watching telly. But thanks to My Butterfly you can reconnect with the Blyton-esque wonders of nature without the attendant cruelty.

It looks like an empty jam jar but tap this glass container or make a noise and the gorgeous faux butterfly inside begins to flutter around in an incredibly lifelike fashion. The effect is utterly compelling, not to mention befuddling because the colourful creature’s random stop-start movement is staggeringly realistic.

My Butterfly: The Yellow Swallowtail

The Yellow Swallowtail

So how does My Butterfly work? We’re not entirely sure but there’s a thin wire inside the jar and its metal lid conceals three AAA batteries. Quite how this causes the fake flapper to move is a mystery. Indeed, we can’t believe it’s not a butterfly!

Having already generated a major buzz at the 2010 Tokyo Toy Fair this amazing curio is set to add a twist of Japanese eccentricity to desks, shelves, worktops and windowsills across the globe. Mums, dads, kids, grandparents and even full-on lepidopterists (butterfly collectors, silly) will be totally mesmerised.

My Butterfly battery compartment

Batteries concealed in the lid

With various butterfly species rapidly becoming endangered, there’s never been a better time to admire an electronic doppelganger. Each jar even comes with its own species-specific, info-packed hang tag. There are four species: Monarch, Yellow Swallowtail, Pink Morpho and Blue Morpho. Each one as stunning as the next. My Butterfly really is the pet that keeps on giving – as long as you change the batteries once in a while. Go on, have a flutter.

visitor avatar Interesting item. My major problem with it is that the jar has too many engravings which sort of hides the butterfly a tad. Why they didn't put it in a clear jar, I do not know.

visitor avatar These are brilliant. Have bought one for our nearly 4 year old daughter who is obsessed with butterflies. She is going to love it!

visitor avatar I bought this for my mother's birthday, This. Is. Brilliant!. I really wish I could have filmed her reaction it was hilarious. I have a brilliant video of our dog going insane over it, I tried to upload it but it comes up with a message saying that, it's not available at this time or something like that. But i'll definitely keep trying. It's WELL worth it! 15/10 product!
Emma, Glasgow - 24th April 2011
visitor avatar Awesome little things, though I think we worked ours a bit hard and now the batteries need replacing. Is there some trick to getting the small screw out of the battery cover or is mine just seriously stuck?
Lewy, Australia - 16th April 2011
Firebox says: With out stating the obvious...a screwdriver! If you have too much trouble let us know, because maybe you have a faulty unit.
visitor avatar Are these real live butterflies?
Matt, UK - 7th February 2011
Firebox says: No, they are electronic (but look real).
visitor avatar Is it not possible to choose the colour? I would love the Yellow Swallowtail for my mum as her birthday present.
Newbie, London - 28th December 2010
Firebox says: Unfortunately we can not promise which one you'll get, but they all look lovely.
visitor avatar I recieved my two butterflies today I ordered two hoping to get the pink one, but I got the blue and yellow. i am amazed with them they are so watch-able, they take me back to my childhood when I used to have a caterpillar farm. I have ordered 4 more, hopefully I will get the pink one this time!
Samantha Marshall, Bridgend - 15th December 2010
visitor avatar My daughter had a bad experience in butterfly world when 1 landed on her shoulder and she was terrified of them, when she was 4yr old! Her boyfriend has just bought her 1 to remind her of this. Thanks Joe !!
Jean, Bolton - 9th December 2010
visitor avatar These are SCARILY realistic! We stock them where I work, really not a good gift to buy to someone with an irrational fear of butterflies and moths, they really do flap about like an actual butterfly and they behave in exactly the same way! Pretty much my worst nightmare in a jar lol, but if butterflies are your thing,Iim sure you`ll enjoy it!
