What colour do they come in? And can you choose?Izzy, United Kingdom - 9th April 2011
Firebox says: There are 4 different colours: Orange, Pink, Yellow and Blue. They are blind picked so you are unable to choose the colour.

Fat from cooking is bad for birds. The problem with cooked fat from roasting tins and dishes is that the meat juices have blended with the fat and when allowed to set, this consistency makes it prone to smearing, not good for birds' feathers. It is a breeding ground for bacteria, so potentially bad for birds' health. Salt levels depend on what meat is used and if any salt is added during cooking.
Lard and beef suet on their own are fine as they re-solidify after warming and as they are pure fat, it is not as suitable for bacteria to breed on.

Firebox says: Hi Vincent,
Many thanks for your comments. We have contacted the supplier of the Fat Bird and received the following response:
I've had a conversation with the RSPB and we have followed their advice on the packaging for the fat bird. The packaging clearly states to refrain from using salty fats as they can dehydrate birds. Smearing is what happens when the fat is left in direct sunlight to go warm, if the bird was to rub against warm fat then there is naturally a chance it would ”smear” onto the birds feathers. We have stated therefor on the box to hang in an appropriate cool location. the packaging also states they are really for winter use when other food is scarce. The same can happen with the fat balls you buy in garden centers if they are left in the sun.Ultimately fat from cooking is not bad for birds, sunlight on fat balls may make them melt which could make them bad. Please be advised to follow the instructions on the box.
