Fat Bird
Don’t pretend you dispose of leftover cooking fat responsibly. You chuck it down the sink, naughty. And so does everyone else judging by the state of our glunged-up sewers. With this planet-hating fact in mind, allow us to present, with a tweet and a peck, Fat Bird.

Fat Bird

Yummy treat

This charming little kit lets you get rid of excess fat by using it to make cakes for birds (feathered variety, obviously). Simply place the string in the reusable funny feet mould, pour in your cooled fat, add the included seeds and pop the entire shebang in the fridge. Once it’s solid, turn out your cake, hang it in the garden and watch in eco-friendly glee as the birds peck away.

The entire family will love making fat cakes. What’s more, you can bulk out your cakey creations with kitchen scraps (nothing too salty, mind). Your branches/windowsill will soon become the in-place for all manner of tweeting wildlife *insert Stephen Fry joke as required*. Best of all you can tell everyone you ordered a Fat Bird off the internet.

Firebox says: There are 4 different colours: Orange, Pink, Yellow and Blue. They are blind picked so you are unable to choose the colour.

visitor avatar Fat from cooking is bad for birds. The problem with cooked fat from roasting tins and dishes is that the meat juices have blended with the fat and when allowed to set, this consistency makes it prone to smearing, not good for birds' feathers. It is a breeding ground for bacteria, so potentially bad for birds' health. Salt levels depend on what meat is used and if any salt is added during cooking. Lard and beef suet on their own are fine as they re-solidify after warming and as they are pure fat, it is not as suitable for bacteria to breed on. http://www. Rspb. Org. Firebox says: Hi Vincent, Many thanks for your comments. We have contacted the supplier of the Fat Bird and received the following response: I've had a conversation with the RSPB and we have followed their advice on the packaging for the fat bird. The packaging clearly states to refrain from using salty fats as they can dehydrate birds. Smearing is what happens when the fat is left in direct sunlight to go warm, if the bird was to rub against warm fat then there is naturally a chance it would ”smear” onto the birds feathers. We have stated therefor on the box to hang in an appropriate cool location. the packaging also states they are really for winter use when other food is scarce. The same can happen with the fat balls you buy in garden centers if they are left in the sun.Ultimately fat from cooking is not bad for birds, sunlight on fat balls may make them melt which could make them bad. Please be advised to follow the instructions on the box.
