Fits neatly in the palm of your hand
It was a decade of big hair, big shoulders and…er, Big Country, so it’s only fitting that one of the greatest playthings to hit the Eighties was called Bigtrak. This revolutionary programmable space rover trundled around millions of households, thrilling kids and adults alike before falling foul of the fashion police (toy division) circa ‘85.
Thankfully you can’t keep a good six-wheeler down because Bigtrak is back in the small but better than ever shape of Bigtrak Jr. This brilliant desktop version of the iconic keypad-clad vehicle features all the functions you remember, plus several 21st century updates you don’t.
Set your coordinates and let it roam
Simply punch in your commands and cross your fingers as Bigtrak Jr executes the sequence, travelling forwards, backwards, left and right. It’ll even fire a volley from its ‘photon’ cannon and lurk behind the sofa before scaring the bejesus out of the cat. Programming a ‘puter has never been such fun.
But what about those updates? Well, Bigtrak Jr boasts a cool ‘memory save’ function allowing you to write programs and save ‘em for future use. Better still an ‘active accessory port’ accommodates various forthcoming accessories including a webcam and foam rocket launcher. Back to the future? We can’t wait.
Trust us... it's more technical than it looks, check out these diagrams
We sent one into space (sort of)!
No, it’s not particularly cutting edge in this day and age, but watching the results of your pre-programming remains as thrilling as ever. We’ll even throw in six moon crater obstacles so you can pretend you’re on the set of Buck Rogers alongside Colonel ‘phwoar’ Deering and that annoying robot that said ‘bidibidibidi’. And if you’re old enough to remember that we sincerely hope you’re buying Bigtrak Jr for your kids. ‘No, left at the sofa, not right at the chair leg!’
Is the Bigtrak Jr. Programmable like the original bigger version Bigtrak. Thanks Ben. Ben Griffiths, Wales - 25th January 2011
Firebox says: Hi Ben, yes it is programmable like the big version.
Just got the Big Trak Jr. For xmas off of my girlfriend and I must say I love it. I never had one as a kid, but always wanted one. This is great fun to play with and (providing you read the instructions to learn the distances) it is easy to program. One question though, when are the accessories coming out? Barry Gibbons, Newcastle - 26th December 2010
Firebox says: We currently don't have a confirmed date but watch this space!
WOW! How much fun is this! Got one for my brother. Retro at its best! Rob, Gravesend - 14th December 2010
I WANT ONE! Although can't decide on Big Trak or Jnr? I missed out on as a kid and at nearly 35 I should give it up. . But the little kid in me is screaming GET IT, GET IT! Andra, Edinburgh - 5th November 2010
Big Trak Jnr is just what I was looking for: a programmable toy for my son's 8th birthday. I'm happy with it, but if only the motors/gears weren't so noisy - what is it doing!? I also don't understand why only 2 of the 6 wheels are driven; we've got a brilliant 6-wheel drive RC buggy that is twice as fast, half as noisy and cost half the price! As a programmable toy it's cool. As a good motorised toy it's quite crude. Richard Ayres, Cambridgeshire - 1st November 2010
I love my Big Trak Jnr! My cousins had one in the 80's and would never let me play with it and now, at 32, I have one all to myself! It has provided great entertainment at work and for my cat and I will be buying lots of these as Christmas pressies! Michelle Wootton, Ipswich - 21st October 2010
