rubbery head

Think of the maddest instrument you’ve ever seen. Now multiply it by a million, fashion it to look like a note of music, give it a squeezable head, a playable neck and a voice like a Stylophone drowning in a sea of theremins. All done? Good, because you should now be thinking about Otamatone.

Utterly bonkers and exclusive to Firebox, this hilariously entertaining electronic instrument is already a smash in Japan and is now set to replicate its success across the globe.

Forget all that plucking and plinking business because playing this battery operated oojamiflip involves sliding your finger along its neck, fretless bass style (an action that, when performed rapidly, can easily be misconstrued). Squeal-diddle-deee!

To create a wah-wah-ish vibrato simply squeeze Otamatone’s rubbery head and watch in incredulity as its mouth opens and closes and the notes begin to quiver. The whole hatstand process is a bit like playing a windless Martian bagpipe. In fact it makes rival nutjob instruments seem positively normal.

With two hands you can play almost any melody you fancy within a one octave range. To change octave simply flick the switch and…who are we kidding? Anyone who understands octaves isn’t going to buy an Otamatone. This loopy gizmo is aimed at fun-loving wannabes who wouldn’t know a B major from a Sgt Major. So what are you waiting for? The next Stairway to Heaven isn’t going to write itself. Wa-a-a-a-ah!

visitor avatar The 'Rock Hair-do' was giving his rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner'............. . Not quite Hendrix!!
Dave Thompson, Wellington, Somerset - 20th February 2011
visitor avatar I saw these when I was in Japan and they are mental! Also, I watched the instructions and they are hilarious (if you really like I can tell you what he says!) and now I might have to buy one to figure out what that 'rock' hair-do made him play!!
Rhiannon, Nottingham - 16th November 2010
visitor avatar That video is possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen...who wants to start up a band?
Siobhan, Manchester - 19th July 2010
visitor avatar Wow, that is SO cool, and the man in the video is pretty wacky to :).
Ella, Yorkshire - 8th July 2010
visitor avatar I like it looks easier than the guitar. I don't think they will have me at open mic night though!!
Linda, Hampshire - 8th July 2010
visitor avatar I have watched the videos on the Firebox website, and they are so hopelessly out of tune, painful to listen to. The slide feature seems to mean that there are no defined notes, so tuning is hopeless. I was thinking of buying one, but having heard it, I won't.
JS, Hampshire - 8th July 2010
visitor avatar I received one of these for my birthday its really fun to play with and if you play an other instrument (flute) it's likely you will be able to guess the notes. :).
Hayley, Scotland - 2nd July 2010
visitor avatar This seems like a fun toy; however I see in the videos it's white, yet you are showing a black version. Which one is on sale? I don't see an option to buy either so is it random?
Lucy Hassall, Shrewsbury - 1st July 2010
Firebox says: We are currently only selling the black version and you can buy it at the top of the page.
visitor avatar This looks fabulous! I understand octaves (grade 8 Violin yeahhh!) and I am totally getting one of these! It's soooo cute!
