What is the body mass index (BMI)?
- This index is simply defined as the weight of an individual divided by the square of his/her height, and is expressed in kg/m2.It is an international standard adopted by the World Health Organization, which allows the risks for health linked to abnormal weight to be evaluated (too low, or excessive).Reference zones, or normality ranges (thinness, normal index, overweight, obesity) are thus established for each level of risk. Generally speaking, a BMI between 18 and 25 defines a weight normality zone, in which the risks of nutrition illnesses are minimal. However BMI is only an indicator, and that it doesn't take an individual's morphology into account. For example major athletes have a high BMI due to their muscular mass, without having any health problems.

I bought these. I was constantly reminded of my weight. I lost 2 stone in a year. I met a girl. I put on half a stone. Conclusion - these are better for weight loss than a woman!
If you seriously want to lose weight then you should buy these. You should turn on Push notifications, and you should weigh yourself daily.

A very high quality and well thought out set of equipment. Works absolutely flawlessly: stand on the scales, it identifies who you are and pops up with your name along with your weight, body fat % and BMI for quick reference. It's then instantly beamed over wifi and lets me view more detailed information on my iPhone/iPad or on my computer. We're absolutely thrilled with these scales. Yes they're expensive, but absolutely fantastic. They're beautiful to look at and very well engineered. No need to press any buttons. We've got five in our household and it knows who we all are. Just step on and it switches on automatically and weighs, deciding who we are according to our history. My teenage sons are similar weights so it gives them a choice of two names and they verify by pressing the right side or left side with a foot. There is no guesswork involved with your weight. It makes a decision to 0. 1 of a pound and sticks to it, time and time again. The online charts are surprisingly motivating and even if you've only lost a tenth of a pound at least this device recognises it and you feel encouraged. Our old scales were almost a stone out and we've been deluding ourselves for years, never again. We were concerned we were being geeky (again) and frivolous buying these but I stand by the decision as a really good one, it's helping our health no end.Sal, Lincoln - 20th August 2010
These are a very well made set of scales that are also wonderful stylish, but their major point is they are enabled so your weight and associated bits and pieces are automatically uploaded to the internet every time you step on them. This means they could not be easier to use. Once you've completed the setup (which is very easy BTW) you just step on them in the morning and you are weighed and measured and in my case found wanting (mostly from wanting that extra helping of pudding the night before). There is no intrusion, no having to wake up enough to write down your weight, no nasty beeps, no fiddling with buttons to tell it who you are (before the first coffee of the morning I'm just not up to that), just step on and wait. Then once you've recovered sufficiently from the shock of waking up you can log onto the website and see what your weight, BMI and %fat are doing, or just check it using the app on your iPhone. Before any panic sets about this talk about the internet, your weight is carefully protected by Withings, and while it can be set to automatically broadcast this information to Twitter or share it on the web these options are sensibly disabled by default (Facebook take note - this is way things should be done). No ones sees the truth but you.
