Settlers of Catan Board Game

Build your empire!

Much as we love wacky board games, you can’t beat a rip-roaring epic; a totally immersive, family-friendly game in which new lands are discovered, colonies are established, armies are amassed, and resources are produced, traded and even stolen. No, we’re not talking about Hungry Hippos. We’re talking about Settlers of Catan.

This award-winning 3-4 player board game has got us gripped with its ultra strategic yet easy-to-learn gameplay. But don’t just take our word for it. Settlers of Catan is already a smash with the tech crowd down in Silicon Valley, and its amazing ability to appeal to both gaming geeks and casual players alike has seen its cult status rocket. Trust us, this baby is about to go ballistic.

Settlers of Catan Resource and Development cards

Resource and Development cards

So what’s it all about? Well, basically, players compete to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities and roads, and generating resources such as wool, brick and grain. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players collect and trade these resources (via various resource cards) to build up their civilisations, amass 10 victory points and win the game. Confused? We don’t doubt it but give it a few minutes and you’ll be hopelessly hooked.

Terrain tiles – build your settlements, cities, roads and generate resources on these:

Mountain Heagon Tile Hills Heagon Tile Forest Heagon Tile

Mountain = Ore

Hills = Brick

Forest = Lumber

Pasture Heagon Tile Field Heagon Tile Desert Heagon Tile

Pasture = Wool

Field = Grain

Desert = Nothing!

Largest Army Card

Beef up your army!

One of Settlers’ greatest strengths is that unlike many strategy games, the board can be set up randomly every time you play, so no two games are alike. Just fit the octagonal terrain pieces together in any order and you’re away.

We could go on explaining the ins and outs of this spectacularly addictive game but trying to explain it in print is like trying to describe quantum physics via the medium of tapestry. Besides, the best way to get into Settlers of Catan is to play it. More importantly we’re in the middle of an incredibly tense game and we don’t want our opponents to suss out our strategy. Your move.

Sales graph for Settlers of Catan in the US

Released in 1995, The Settlers of Catan only recently caught
fire in the U.S

Settlers is now poised to become the biggest hit in the US since Risk. Along the way, it's teaching Americans that board games don't have to be either predictable fluff aimed at kids or competitive, hyperintellectual pastimes for eggheads. Through the complex, artful dance of algorithms and probabilities lurking at its core, Settlers manages to be effortlessly fun, intuitively enjoyable, and still intellectually rewarding, a potent combination that's changing the American idea of what a board game can be.

Visitor Reviews...

visitor avatar A good entry level game to the 'proper' board games. A little too random for hardcore gamers but good for the family. I certainly wouldn't liken it to either Monopoly or Risk, let alone a mix of the two.

visitor avatar This is a brilliant game. We are a board game and card playing family and my brother introduced us to this about 10 years ago when he bought it in Germany. We christened it Ritter for short and it's been a regular family favourite since then. It has often prompted all night tournaments and is so ingrained in our family that we have our own extra rules specifically created to manage the sulking (Simon if he isn't winning), moaning (Mum if her numbers don't come up) and underhand dealing (all of us if we can get away with it) that accompany each game. We now are beginning to play with my 12 and 9 year old too. I thoroughly recommend this to anyone who enjoys strategy board games - the best board game we have by far.

visitor avatar You will not regret buying this game and it can't be long before Firebox do indeed begin stocking the extra scenarios and the 5-6 player expansion packs. My six year old son loves it and can be a mean trader the closer he gets to winning. Guarantees roundabout an hour of the best family game play available.

visitor avatar I played this game a few times its okay but I really hope firebox stocks some big boardgames like descent.
Gabriel, Wigan - 24th February 2010
visitor avatar Utterly brilliant introduction into what board games are capable nowadays - everyone is involved all the time, a little chance and a lot of skillful play make this a fun, involving, family friendly piece of brilliance. Millions of players worldwide can't be wrong.
Alan, Brighton - 18th February 2010
visitor avatar I've owned a copy of this game for years and it is brilliant! So glad that it is now seeing time on firebox. If you buy this you will want firebox to stock the expansion packs so you can have those too. This is a purchase you will not regret.

visitor avatar Awesome game!!
Sarah, Kent - 9th February 2010
visitor avatar Played this game at a friend's house. Looked really confusing at first, but it's actually really easy to get in to. Be warned though: This game turns seasoned friends into mortal enemies. You will want to win!
Max, London - 6th February 2010
visitor avatar This is an amazing game fully deserving of the awards and the regard it has on the board game circut. Because the board changes every time you play, so does the way you have to play it to win New players really do pick it up in a few mins and no one I've ever played it with hasn't enjoyed it (and played at least one more time) Add to that the fact that sometimes you need to make a trade to get the resource you need, you too will be enjoying the phrase: "1 Wood for 2 Sheep anyone?" What more could you want in a game!
David, Kent - 5th February 2010
visitor avatar Settlers is one of the best board games of all time. Some have described it as a cross between monopoly and risk, with the trading element of the former and the tactics of the latter. I first learnt to play when overseas and it one of the first things I bought one my return, quickly introducing it to some of my closest friends. It's an excellent game which is easy to learn, with a lot of customization available to how you play. Give it a try, you won't regret it!
