Chumby One

New: Chumby One with volume dial

When the gods of gadgetry decide to call their latest creation Chumby, you know it’s gonna be good. But what in the name of gizmology is it, we hear you ask? Well basically, Chumby is a cute little Wi-Fi friendly ‘widget machine’ that pulls content off the web and delivers it in a friendly format. Think of it as a touchscreen portal to the best bits of your online life. A stream catcher, if you will.

With Chumby by your side (well, on your bedside table, kitchen worktop or mantelpiece) you can listen to podcasts, audiobooks and internet radio, keep track of friends on Facebook, twaddle away on Twitter, watch vids, play games, gawp at photos on Flickr, check out eBay bids, read the news, groan at the weather…the list is endless. The only thing you can’t do is fiddle with snoozeworthy documents and spreadsheets. Hooray!

As well as its widget-tastic capabilities, Chumby features an accelerometer (perfect for tilt-responsive games), 2W stereo speakers and a headphone output, so you can listen in peace or irritate housemates – no mean feat, because thanks to its squishy beanbag-ish housing, Chumby is cuter than a dozing puppy. Talking of dozing, it even functions as an alarm clock, albeit an incredibly flash one.

Once you’ve fiddled with your widgets via Chumby you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it. This is the start of a beautiful relationship. So bin your alarm clock radio: it’s time to quit dreaming and start streaming.

Visitor Reviews...

visitor avatar Hi there firebox, does the Chumby connect to your media centre within your home - as that's what I need, something I can connect to my favourite music and videos on our media centre. If not, what else do you offer that would do this? Many thanks. I think chumby have missed a trick if the clock function doesn't work without access to a wi-fi, after all, even if you have internet, some providers are more reliable than others, and you may not have neighbours with wi-fi you can use while you wait 2 weeks for them to fix it (happened to a friend of mine).
Peri, UK - 16th February 2011
visitor avatar About the internet connection, I have a router made by Netgear, and my laptop runs of it wirelessly, would this be compatible for Chumby?
Helen Thompson, - 14th February 2011
Firebox says: Indeed it would!
visitor avatar I have a question. Say I have a clock app but I take the Chumby away to a place where there is no wi-fi, does my clock app stop working ? I guess what I'm getting at is does anything work 'off-line' ?
Kevin, Coventry - 18th November 2010
Firebox says: Not really, I'm afraid! It's really only designed for use in a wi-fi zone, so not even the clock works without it.
visitor avatar Does anybody know if this baby can get Radio4 on the internet ?
Ppalaz, Crete - 29th October 2010
Firebox says: No - the Chumby does not currently support WMA files.
visitor avatar I have two questions: 1. Do you have to buy the widgets or are they free? 2. Can you play online games such as wizard101?
Maddie Wright, Dorset - 27th September 2010
Firebox says: Maddie, 1. Widgets are free to download. 2. Highly unlikely. Hope this helps!
visitor avatar I was wondering if you can buy some memory for the chumby as I have just bought one from you today and I am taking it on holiday with me and want to put some videos and music on it if there is a answer then I would be very great full thank you.
Bradley Butler-huish, Newport, Wales - 5th March 2010
Firebox says: Unfortunately not Bradley. Sorry.
visitor avatar The Chumby is ace... Okay, you could argue that it is a glorified alarm clock, but it is soooo cute! The squishy outer casing is adorable and it also comes with some entirely pointless, but still darn cute, Chumby charms... It's very easy to set up and you just need to log onto Chumby. Com to activate... you can add bizarre, useful, and frankly 'off the map' widgets. I personally love the Death Star clocks and Newton's cradle...I kid you not. You can also get Facebook, Twitter, News, photos and music. It's a quirky little gadget which will brighten your existence!!
Jeanette Burton, Manchester - 12th December 2009
visitor avatar Have to say that the four "customer photos" for this item all look remarkably professional.
Gareth, Cornwall, UK - 2nd December 2009
Firebox says: Busted! Yeah, they are, we wanted to put the manufacturers pretty pictures up but didn't have enough space to do. They just give a better idea of the Chumby in its natural habitat. The first *customer* to put up a photo will still receive a voucher though!
visitor avatar I love my Chumby! I have two of these little guys. They keep me on time with an app to tell me if my trains are on time. You can use it to display RSS feeds to keep you up to date. I have created clock apps for it. It displays track info and artwork for my Internet radio stations. It really is a versatile little bit of kit, and if there's something it doesn't do you can write your own apps.
