Hot and steamy!

Hot and steamy!

Unless you’re some kind of Bear Grylls style survival weirdo, you’ll know how difficult it can be getting a decent hot meal when you’re enjoying the great outdoors. Besides, who can be bothered with all that twig rubbing malarkey? Not us because we’ve discovered HotCans.

Despite sounding like a chain of dodgy lap dancing clubs, these amazing 400g tins of yumminess contain delicious ready meals that heat up, as if by magic, when you crack ‘em open. No hob, campfire or washing up liquid required.

Place can onto lid

Pierce outer jacket with included key

Open can and wait 12 minutes

Simply remove the rubber cap, pierce the holes with the included key, open the insulated can and gawp in ravenous anticipation as a totally safe exothermic reaction heats up your highly scoffable meal in about 12 minutes. We’ve heard of convenience food but this is ridiculous. Mmm…piping hot sausage and beans!

Of course this whole exercise would be completely pointless if the grub was gopping, but HotCan recipes are really rather delish. We’re not talking haute cuisine but they’re certainly up there with your better quality ready meals. What’s more HotCans are suitably calorific and nutritionally balanced, so as well as satisfying all you outdoorsy types, they put sandwiches, Pot Doodahs and rival so-called fast food to shame. Pizza Yuck and Unlucky Fried Deadthing? No thanks.

flavours available

Cans available (from L-R):Chicken Curry, Vegetable Chilli, Spicy Beef Pasta, Sausages and Beans, Beans with Meatballs

Come to think of it HotCans are good enough to eat anywhere, even in the house. And with a shelf life of three years you can stash a few in the cupboard for emergencies – you know, knackered microwave, post pub lethargy, extreme laziness, World War III. That kind of thing. When cooked food is this easy to prepare, the only hard bit is deciding which HotCan you fancy: sausage and beans, spicy beef pasta, beans and meatballs, chicken curry with rice or vegetable chilli. We’d love to advise you but we’re writing this from the Firebox bunker and we’ve lost the cutlery. Aargh!

visitor avatar These are actually very good - a bit cheaper on amazon though....
Mike, UK - 16th December 2011
visitor avatar The taste is ok, what you would expect really, little too much sauce but I suppose that conducts the heat, oh and the heat!! not good, waited the time, not great. The bottom part was hot, but the rest was barely warmed.
Lawrence, Northampton - 18th October 2011
visitor avatar Bought as a gift for a friend who does car booting in the cold! Says the sausage n beans was delish and brilliant idea. Just waiting for the Rhubarb Crumble and Custard to come out.
Tanya, Bradford - 30th May 2011
visitor avatar I received two of these as a Christmas present but have yet to eat them. Where can you find the best before date?? I can't seem to locate it anywhere.
Azelle, Derby - 30th May 2011
visitor avatar How hot does the outside of the can get?
Gordon, United Kingdom - 25th May 2011
Firebox says: It's got a layer on insulation so that you are able to hold it.
visitor avatar The cans are fantastic and the meals are well tasty. Only downside is the cost. A normal premier 400g can of beans and sausages will cost about a quid, so you are paying around a fiver for the heating gizmo. At the last festival we were at, we bought 4 plain baked potatoes from a stall and shared a can of beans between us - sorted!
Richard Jones, Fareham - 24th May 2011
visitor avatar How many sausages on average are there in the beans and sausage can? Is it a healthy ratio of beans:sausages, or are the sausages completely overwhelmed by the might and mass of the beans?
Holly, Surrey - 24th March 2011
Firebox says: It's a healthy balance. The sausages can hold their own against those beans.
visitor avatar Are the HotCans airplane friendly?
Greg Ross, East Kilbride, Scotland - 8th March 2011
Firebox says: Greg, it's probably best to check with the airline before packing your HotCan.
visitor avatar Will you be getting any more flavors?
Thomas, Andover - 26th January 2011
Firebox says: We'll look into it Thomas,
visitor avatar These where really handy when I went to Peru it saved me eating rat so 10 out of 10.
Karl Pilkington, London - 23rd January 2011
Firebox says: Even better than Guinea Pig!
