Hot and steamy!

Hot and steamy!

Unless you’re some kind of Bear Grylls style survival weirdo, you’ll know how difficult it can be getting a decent hot meal when you’re enjoying the great outdoors. Besides, who can be bothered with all that twig rubbing malarkey? Not us because we’ve discovered HotCans.

Despite sounding like a chain of dodgy lap dancing clubs, these amazing 400g tins of yumminess contain delicious ready meals that heat up, as if by magic, when you crack ‘em open. No hob, campfire or washing up liquid required.

Place can onto lid

Pierce outer jacket with included key

Open can and wait 12 minutes

Scott scoffing sausages. Scrumptious!

Scott scoffing sausages. Scrumptious!

Simply remove the rubber cap, pierce the holes with the included key, open the insulated can and gawp in ravenous anticipation as a totally safe exothermic reaction heats up your highly scoffable meal in about 12 minutes. We’ve heard of convenience food but this is ridiculous. Mmm…piping hot sausage and beans!

Of course this whole exercise would be completely pointless if the grub was gopping, but HotCan recipes are really rather delish. We’re not talking haute cuisine but they’re certainly up there with your better quality ready meals. What’s more HotCans are suitably calorific and nutritionally balanced, so as well as satisfying all you outdoorsy types, they put sandwiches, Pot Doodahs and rival so-called fast food to shame. Pizza Yuck and Unlucky Fried Deadthing? No thanks.

Come to think of it HotCans are good enough to eat anywhere, even in the house. And with a shelf life of three years you can stash a few in the cupboard for emergencies – you know, knackered microwave, post pub lethargy, extreme laziness, World War III. That kind of thing. When cooked food is this easy to prepare, the only hard bit is deciding which HotCan you fancy: sausage and beans, beef casserole or vegetable chilli. We’d love to advise you but we’re writing this from the Firebox bunker and we’ve lost the cutlery. Aargh!

visitor avatar Festi food is about £5 a meal anyway, and is way more unhealthy than these! I'm glad I'm not friends with these tight reviewers!
Nicola Thropp, Lincoln - Sep '09
visitor avatar Are these cans one shot, or can you use reverse magic so they can be used to heat up other things afterwards?
Mike, Luton - Nov '09
Firebox says: Just the once Mike, although that would be awesome.

visitor avatar Does it have a spoon with it?? ^_^.
Sophy McNeill, Droitwich - Oct '09
Firebox says: Yep - comes with a spoon!

visitor avatar How do they heat up?
Scott, Uk - Oct '09
Firebox says: Magic.

visitor avatar Brought the beans and sauasage one to keep in the car for emergencys, went to sorting office to pick it up, on the way home got a flat tyre, deemed it a emergency so cracked open the beans and sausages, does what it says and didnt taste to bad at all, will defo get some more and think will make good presey for outdoorsy brother, think they would be good if you had kids too for keeping in car.
Maxine, Hampshire - Sep '09
visitor avatar Yes they are a little expensive and yes it's just normal tinned food. You pay for the convenience of having to do naff all. Firebox even give you a spoon. If you have a tenner or so spare get yourself 1 or 2. Does exactly what it says on the tin (sorry), they get very hot. I didn't enjoy the casserole mind but S&B was cool. Bear in mind weight if you're taking to a fest because they are quite heavy, I managed two however :).

visitor avatar I used these a couple of years ago when we had the flooding, the fire service were giving them out to families who had been badly affected by it. I think they're awesome, and they are pretty tasty - the Vegetable Chilli one was a particular fave of mine!
Mitch, Chesterfield - Aug '09
visitor avatar They are £3. 99 a tin on the manufacturers website. Bet they don't approve this review : ).
Andrea Ormerod, Padiham, Lancashire - Aug '09
Firebox says: Only one is, the rest are £4.25 but you have to buy in multiples of four and delivery costs upwards of £5 :)

visitor avatar Yeah, and better get a Slanket to take with you.

visitor avatar I was using this technology back in 1992 while serving in Northern Ireland, while in the army. Not new technology. But still pretty impressive.
