Firebox Unboxes... review!

Remember when camcorders were bigger than Volvo estates and heavier than anvils? No, neither do we. We chose to forget about the humungous contraptions the day digital camcorders hit the scene. And looking, nay squinting, at the Muvi Micro Digital Video Camera, who can blame us?

Impossibly diddy, this ludicrously peasy movie cam is set to redefine the genre. One button does the lot. Moreover, at only 5.5cm x 2cm x 2cm, it's one of the smallest camcorders in the world. You can even wear it around your neck and use it as a webcam. Try doing that with your old tape-munching camcorder. Actually, don't. You'll hurt yourself and break your computer.

Micro SD Card Slot

2GB Micro SD Card

Despite its eye-rubbing weeny-ness the Muvi Micro records in VGA quality (640x480) equivalent to the best selling (and comparatively enormous) Mino and Ultra by Flip. Incredible! Videos are stored on the included 2GB Micro SD card, but for those of you who prefer real epics the Muvi Micro can handle cards up to 8GB.

Wannabe movie moguls with a penchant for boxing gloves (well you never know) can rest easy because the Muvi Micro has a special VOX mode that lets you start/stop recording using your voice (or any other noise over 65 decibels). "Annnnd….action!" It's ideal for those moments when your hands aren't to…erm, hand, or you feel like going on a Christian Bale style rant.

Micro Muvi Camcorder mounted on the bike helmet bracket

Time for a road trip!

Speaking of action, this sleek miracle of miniaturisation is encased in a tough metal shell, so you can video that bloke out of Kings of Leon's lower legs from the mosh pit without having to refer to the guarantee. Better still, if you're into mountain biking, snowboarding and walking around the pub with a camera strapped to your noggin, the boffins behind the Muvi have created an Extreme Sports Pack. This smart collection of brackets, clips and straps allows all you Jackass types to attach the camera to almost anything. Even your helmet.

As you've undoubtedly guessed, the Muvi Micro is charged via USB while uploaded movies can be fiddled with using the included software. In fact the only thing not included is a bunch of imbecilic friends who'll pass out, trip over and drop their pants for your movie making amusement. That's a wrap!

Extreme Sports Pack and Waterproof Kit are for Muvi Micro only:

Press Reviews...

press review "For the price, the Muvi is envy-inducing for its styling and its footage. Downloading the footage to your computer is painless... It's amazingly good quality , considering the two megapixel lens, and it responds fast to changes in light. Low-light performance is good and the sound quality is impressive."
The Times - Dec '10
press review "Three stars. The smallest camcorder in the world. So if you prize tiny tech above all else, the Atom's amazing."

press review "Perfect for extreme sport addicts, this mini DV camera is so small you could squeeze it into a matchbox."
Sport - Feb '10
press review "...with voice-activated recording, this tiny camcorder needs no straps r mounts, which is handy if you're not into that whole cyborg look"
Stuff (voted 'Best For Survelliance') - Nov '09
press review "This astoundingly compact video recorder is smaller than the average thumb, so it can be clipped onto your polo shirt's lapel for unobtrusive filming at the 15th hole. The 2MP footage, is light on detail but colours are bright, and there's plenty of storage if you swap the supplied 2GB microSD card for an 8GB one. Voice-activated recording is handy, given the tiny record button, and LED indicators make it easy to see when it's shooting. However, directing the lens can be a bit hit and miss without a viewfinder. The optional Extreme kit (£20) can be used to attach it to your head, arm or a flat surface."
Practical Caravan - Aug '09
press review "The palm-sized camcorder claims to be the world's smallest. With up to 8GB of storage via micro SD card for four hours footage."
What Mobile - Jul '09
press review "A raft of tips and attractive design impressed...it was easy to assemble and folded into a small package. 4 out of 5. Recommended"
Auto Express - Jul '09
press review "This impossibly small gadget will redefine your car action movies! Despite it's size, it provides a resolution to match much larger units, while it's easy to use and even features voice activation"
Auto Express - Jul '09
press review "The Muvi Micro Camcorder may appear small but records in VGA quality (640x480).."

visitor avatar Probably the best camera I've ever had. Good clear pictures and it will take a bit of a beating. Mine got run over by a 4x4 and still works perfectly, just a little scratch on the back! :D:D.
Michael, Basildon, Essex - 18th April 2010
visitor avatar What is the difference between the two models, apart from the size difference? I don't get it!
Blake, London - 16th April 2010
Firebox says: The Extreme Sports Pack and Waterproof Kit are for Muvi Micro ONLY. The battery life for the Muvi Micro is 2 hours as opposed to 1 hour for the Muvi Atom. The Atom comes with Bike Mount attachment and Helmet attachment. I hope this helps!
visitor avatar VERY Sturdy little device! I just received one of these micro-cams for Christmas (2009), and was using it on my cycle-commute home (www. MapMyRide. Com/CyclingBilly), and it popped OUT of the little clip-on carrier. I'm a little over 6' tall and it was attached to the TOP of my cycling helmet, so it fell MORE than 6 feet... and THEN, as I was stopping the bike, I ran over it and skidded just a bit on it! Stupid thing STILL works and works JUST like new!! :-0 VERY Sturdy little device, is an understatement!
