The front, side and back of the Flip MinoHD

Flip Mino HD

Unless you’ve just emerged from a ten year stretch in the Martian branch of the head-up-your-backside correctional facility, you’ll know that Flip camcorders have been a global smash. Operated by just a few buttons, these idiot-proof point-and-shoot moviemakers feature a flip-out USB arm and built-in software that makes uploading, editing and sending high quality vids a doddle.

But if you think that’s cool, prepare to go gaga as we present Flip’s gobsmacking new HD offerings, the MinoHD and UltraHD. These astonishing little camcorders offer all the Fliptastic features you know and love, plus (and it’s a big plus) stunning high definition video. Impressed? You should be because they’re the smallest HD camcorders in the world.

How it works

Point and shoot 60mins (MinoHD) / 120 mins (UltraHD)

Use touch screen controls to delete or save

Connect via USB to your Mac or PC

Proving size isn’t everything (as Mrs Firebox continually assures us) these amazing camcorders produce incredibly vibrant (1280x720) HD video that totally belies their pocket-friendly dimensions.

Introducing the different Flip HD models...

The Flip MinoHD in its pouch

(From L-R) The Flip MinoHD and the New Chrome Flip MinoHD

First up, meet the MinoHD. This 4GB moment-snatcher holds up to 60 minutes of video; ample time to produce an HD classic starring Action Man and the cat. Powered by an internal rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, making it super-slim, the Mino also boasts touch-sensitive controls and a 1.5” screen. Even cooler, it’s now available in a gleaming chrome effect finish, so as well as looking all liquid Terminator-ish, it allows you to see your reflection and frame yourself whilst you film. Vain, moi?

The Flip UltraHD

8GB built-in memory!

Next, say ‘loving your work’ to the UltraHD. Thanks to a meaty 8GB memory this big hitter can record up to 2 hours of video, so shooting an HD epic featuring alarming close ups of your left nostril is a doddle. Better still you can review your efforts on the fly via its 2” screen. Powered by a rechargeable AA battery pack the UltraHD is the ideal Flip for wannabe Tarantinos or would-be Winners (well, you never know). You can even hook it up to your telly via HDMI.

New FlipShare Software

visitor avatar I was in Germany at the time when I saw this video camera. We were allowed to try it out and see how it worked and what the playback was like on the screen. All I can say is that I was blown away with the quality of this product. It also has a microphone which does not muffle your voice in anyway. It does not have background noise either. I would recommend this product to anyone. Its just to good if its avalible from firebox you know you can rely on it. It is one perfect product! :).
Christian, Berkshire - Aug '09
visitor avatar Extremely easy and practical to use. Very good video quality!! Useful integrated usb!! And very fun to play with :P Going to test it when I get back to uni to film lectures secretly :P Thanks for a brilliant purchase!! Was so tempting to buy so I pre-ordered the item. Couldn't stop thinking about it all the way through! Brilliant Investment! The mini portable HD device has finally arrived!! :D.

visitor avatar I love the Mino HD camera! Pluses: - it produces great quality video - it's a tiny product you can always have with you for impromptu filming - easy to save and upload videos to You Tube, My Space, or email to friends - built-in basic video editing software Minuses: - the built-in USB jack is a great idea but I'm a little worried about the weight of the camera being borne by the jack (a USB extension cable or hub is a worthwhile addition) - very hard to hold or pan steady due to it's size (a small tripod is required to get really smooth footage. I wonder if it has any kind of anti shake mechanism?) - I worry over the lens getting scratched because it is very exposed (a hard case would be very usefull for rough filming situations) - there used to be a cheap underwater case for previous models, but I don't think there is one for the Mino - a HDMI jack on this model would seem to be a requirement since it IS for HD (it's available on the Ultra HD) All in all, it is a fantastic piece of kit (most of the minuses above are very minor issues). It's great to have a full HD camera that is the size of a mobile phone. It means that you can always have it on your person and not have to plan ahead if you want to do any filming. Cheers James.

visitor avatar Must you use the provided software, or can you import directly into other video software, such as iMovie on the Mac?
Andrew Macaulay-Brook, Bath, UK - Sep '09
Firebox says: You 'may' be able to, as it appears as a separate drive when plugged into your PC. But we recommend using the clever software.

visitor avatar The chrome looks awesome but I want the 120 minute record time. Any chance of getting a chrome Ultra HD in the future?
James Freeman, Devon - Aug '09
Firebox says: There's always a possibility - we're waiting to see what the manufacturers come up with next!

visitor avatar Will the films from the HD model be able to be watched/downloaded onto a laptop ?
Sarah, Worcester - Aug '09
Firebox says: Yep!

visitor avatar Just wondered if I get the HD flip camcorder, will the films be watchable/downloadable on a normal laptop ? ?
Sarah, Worcester - Aug '09
Firebox says: Yep, just plug it in via the incorporated USB lead!

visitor avatar This sounds great but how easy is it to save to a dvd that is playable on a normal dvd player.
Nigel, Somerset - Aug '09
Firebox says: Fairly easy provided your computer has a DVD burner and software (there are plenty of packages available over the internet for download)

visitor avatar The Flip Mino HD really is a great value camera, though it's best to get the tripod as well because getting a steady shot is really difficult! I am using it for my site Flip Florence and the images are clear though it's better to shoot in daylight as the camera really doesn't like low light environments.
Jason, Florence, Italy - Jul '09
visitor avatar Can you add in memory sticks, or replace them? I'm going on holiday and would like to take a few memory sticks that I can record video to.
Chris, London - Jul '09
Firebox says: You can't, unfortunately
