USB Negative Scanner

Place your negatives into the film holder...

The great thing about old 35mm photos is that most of us have them 'backed up' on negatives stuffed in forgotten drawers. The bad thing, however, is that most of us can't remember what's on the negatives until we hold them up to the light and squint. And even then it's hard to tell. Enter the truly ingenious USB Negative Scanner.
USB Negative Scanner

L-R: Deluxe VFS-004, new VFS-002m

At the touch of a button this idiot-proof gizmo scans 35mm negatives or slides and converts the trapped images into digital pics. You can then edit, crop and resize them using the included software ready for printing, archiving or just viewing on the big screen. It's like delving into the past without the DeLorean.

Now you can upload your old pics!

Using the USB Negative Scanner is a doddle. Simply plug it in your USB port (no mains power or batteries required), slip a negative or slide into the respective holder and push it through. The image then appears on screen. All you do is wait a few seconds for the intuitive software to adjust the back light and colour balance and hit scan. Before you can say 'oh gawd, look at me fringe!' you'll have a genuine 5 megapixel piccy on your PC.

USB Negative Scanner

Converts slides too

Compact and sleek, this hi-tech device will save you a fortune at the photo lab and it's so easy to use you'll be converting all those long-forgotten pics in no time: mum and dad's wedding, old birthdays, that holiday where you insisted on wearing a pre-ironic Take That t-shirt; even really old negs of granny in her Sunday best or dusty slides you last viewed on dad's clumsy projector.

USB Negative Scanner

Brush included!

A great gift for mum, dad or anyone who's ever owned a 35mm camera, the USB Negative Scanner is a brilliant way of getting old photos on social networking sites, especially if your best mate had a hairdo like Pee-wee Herman and your emo sister was into East 17. Who says you can't turn a negative into a positive?

Customer Reviews

Deluxe VFS-004. Great gadget, does exactly what it is supposed to do and is very easy to setup. It turns out I have quite a large selection of negatives that won't fit properly in the negative trays (they don't fit between the windows properly). Are the negative trays mentioned as accessories above of varying sizes to the three trays that came included? Or where might I get other ones?
Mark - 6th January 2012
Firebox says: Hi Mark, Veho (the manufacturer) sell different trays here that may be of some help to you:
Bought this for my Dad as a Chrsitmas present (£50 version - the simpler the better), was a bit worried he would find the technology difficult to use. Shouldn't have been concerned at all. I set it up for him & after that it was so simple & straightforward to use. He was doing it all on his own. I reckon this is as close to 'plug-in-and-go' as you could get. Fab product! Also - I've read the other comments about problems with exposure/quality. Dad did 200 of his slides while I was with him, only one looked like the focus was off but that turned out to be the slide (I improved it a bit with the basic Windows software on his PC anyway) so no complaints in that department either.

Firebox says: Great info Hannah, cheers!
I try the scanner with my laptop and PC and it worked well first time, then it would only show a black image and captured nothing. The light inside the machine is still working, but nothing is captured.

Firebox says: Hi there, it sounds like there may unfortunately be a fault with your scanner, drop us an email with some further details to and we'll see if we can get a replacement sent out to you.
This is more of a question than a review, I would be grateful for your help please I am wanting to buy this for someone who has slides but they are in cardboard rather than plastic... will it still work the same?? Thankyou.
Ali Holway - 17th July 2011
Firebox says: As long as they are standard sizes Ali, there should be no problem at all.
Will this work on a mac?
Jonah - 4th May 2011
Firebox says: The VFs-002 will, the Deluxe VFS-004 will not.
I previously wrote to you regarding problems with loading the software which is now OK. However having reviewed 50 or so slides which I have scanned the quality is very poor. The original slides are fine but the scanned images appear dark and the colours are bad with a strong blue tint. Using the software partially rectifies the problem, but the overall result is very far from satisfactory. I must say I am far from happy, is there any advise you can give, otherwise I need to return the product for a full refund.
Peter Stafford - 1st April 2011
Firebox says: We're really sorry to hear that Peter, it sounds like the unit may be faulty. I've dropped you an email, so hopefully we can resolve this shortly.
