USB Negative Scanner

Place your negatives into the film holder...

The great thing about old 35mm photos is that most of us have them 'backed up' on negatives stuffed in forgotten drawers. The bad thing, however, is that most of us can't remember what's on the negatives until we hold them up to the light and squint. And even then it's hard to tell. Enter the truly ingenious USB Negative Scanner.
USB Negative Scanner

L-R: Deluxe VFS-004, new VFS-002m

At the touch of a button this idiot-proof gizmo scans 35mm negatives or slides and converts the trapped images into digital pics. You can then edit, crop and resize them using the included software ready for printing, archiving or just viewing on the big screen. It's like delving into the past without the DeLorean.

How it works...

Convert your negative into a digital image!

USB Negative Scanner

The Negative Scanner is powered via USB!

USB Negative Scanner

Now you can upload your old pics!

Using the USB Negative Scanner is a doddle. Simply plug it in your USB port (no mains power or batteries required), slip a negative or slide into the respective holder and push it through. The image then appears on screen. All you do is wait a few seconds for the intuitive software to adjust the back light and colour balance and hit scan. Before you can say 'oh gawd, look at me fringe!' you'll have a genuine 5 megapixel piccy on your PC.

USB Negative Scanner

Converts slides too

Compact and sleek, this hi-tech device will save you a fortune at the photo lab and it's so easy to use you'll be converting all those long-forgotten pics in no time: ma and pa's wedding, old birthdays, that holiday where you insisted on wearing a pre-ironic N Sync t-shirt; even really old negs of granny in her Sunday best or dusty slides you last viewed on pa's clumsy projector.

USB Negative Scanner

Brush included!

A great gift for ma, pa or anyone who's ever owned a 35mm camera, the USB Negative Scanner is a brilliant way of getting old photos on social networking sites, especially if your best mate had a hairdo like Pee-wee Herman and your goth sister was into New Kids on the Block. Who says you can't turn a negative into a positive?

Visitor Reviews...

visitor avatar Considering the price, I think it's a great scanner, perfect for straightforward photos, which most slides from the sixties are! Easy to operate, comes with very clear instructions, rather fast and a whole lot better that scanning slides with my HP5470C scanjet.
Rob, - Nov '08
visitor avatar Do either of these scanners have a tray that allows you to scan mounted slides?
Fiona, Leeds - Jul '10
Firebox says: No, sorry Fiona.

visitor avatar When you say 'Not suitable for transparancies'; as slides are tranparencies what do you mean?
Richard Rees, United Kingdom - Jun '10
Firebox says: A transparency is a slide that has been placed within a slide mount - like a frame and is not suitable for the USB Negative Scanner. Whereas a 35mm slide without a frame is fine.

visitor avatar Can this work with the new Windows 7? Thank you.
Michell, Alaska - Apr '10
Firebox says: No, but the Film 2 SD Negative Scanner will.

visitor avatar Not a review but a question. One website i've looked at is telling me that the non-deluxe version outputs 5MP images, as oppossed to the 3MP you say?
Conor John, Caldicot - Apr '10
Firebox says: The scanning resolution for the VFS-002m is 3 megapixel and the deluxe VFS-004 is 5 megapixel. We can't really comment on products from other sites, but I can confirm the resolution of the scanners we stock. I hope this helps!

visitor avatar I assume there is no Linux version of the software? Do you know if it will run under wine (or if I can use the scanner without the included software)?
Mike, England - Feb '10
Firebox says: I'm afraid not. There is no Linux software, the software will not run using Wine and you cannot use the scanner without the included software. Hope that helps!

visitor avatar Will either scanner take the "APS" type of negatives? I've got dozens of these films and they take up even more space than 35mm!
Colin, Hayling Island - Jan '10
Firebox says: Unfortunately neither of the USB negative scanners will scan APS negatives as we do not have a negative holder that can take them, and the software does not have an APS option.

visitor avatar Hi all, does the deluxe version take 110 negs as well?
Sam, Heathrow - Jan '10
Firebox says: Unfortunately not, just the VFS-002m version. Sorry!

visitor avatar An individual above says it works with the Mac but only produced 3MB pictures - i'm fine with that. But later you say it doesn't work with a Mac. Is it compatible please as I want to buy one for an XMAS present.
Dave, UK - Dec '09
Firebox says: The VFS-002m is Mac compatible. The Deluxe VFS-004 isn't.

visitor avatar Thinking of getting one for a gift. Do you have to use the negative trays? And at 3 megapixels is the quality good enough to print photos?
Cliona, London - Dec '09
Firebox says: Yes the negative trays or slide holders need to be used. 3 Megapixels will produce good standard sized photos but the Deluxe VFS-004 with 5 Megapixels will allow you to print larger photos too.
