Firewinder
Any way the wind glows
Sorry, this product is not available.
100% wind powered light!
100% wind-powered, Firewinder is unlike anything we've ever seen. By day it's a relatively unobtrusive dangling corkscrew doodah that spins in the wind. But when night falls and the wind blows, it lights up, creating a beautiful spiralling effect. The faster the blow the greater the glow, so in a real gust Firewinder becomes a pulsating pillar of light. It's truly spellbinding and eco-friendly to boot.

7 LED lights on the
New Firewinder Mini
The tree hugging boffins behind Firewinder hope that it will be adopted as an international symbol of sustainability throughout the world. And although that sounds a bit Chris and Gwynnie it's a great idea, especially when you consider the fact that, in full spin, the ultra bright LEDs embedded in each Firewinder are visible from over 250m. What's more, it is made using as many recyclable materials as possible, and is designed to be disassembled once its life is over. Planet-hating power-sources? Who needs 'em!
(From L-R) The Original Firewinder and the New Firewinder Mini

"Shedding light up to 25 metres in all directions, this helical, outdoor light could be the ultimate green gadget."Grand Designs - Nov '08

I got a large one of these for my Birthday and put it up over the front door, it stopped working after a short while. I took it down and you could see water ingress in the LED's. Complete waste of money, disappointing and for the price you expect it to last more than a couple of months.Mark, Norfolk - 28th January 2012
Firebox says: Hi Mark, give us a shout on info@firebox.com as its sounds like you have a faulty one!
Don't buy this product, support is bad, not even a response and like everyone says they die after a while - lights go off and bearings rust. Don't do it unless you have money to throw in the wind!Philippe, Switzerland - 17th January 2012
Firebox says: Hi Phillippe. Sorry to hear your having problems with your Firewinder. Please email us on info@firebox.com with your details and we will be glad to help.
I bought two of the large firewinders last year for my mother and mother in law - with the amount of wind we get in Wales the gardens lit up like nothing id seen - they were beautiful - but now, they spin so much and not even a faint glow :( im very upset about this as I spent over 100 quid on them and they havent even lasted a year :( they used to look so pretty with the lights reflecting off our ponds.Kerry, Wales - 6th December 2011
Firebox says: Hi Kerry, I am very sorry to hear about your Firewinders. Why not contact Info@Firebox.com and let them know about your problem. I'm sure they will be glad to help.
I've had two of these and both have died. I took the last one apart and found that the problem was that the tracks, on the surface mount components, had broken. The boards have not coating to protect then, so will die after a year or so. Also it does require a lot of wind to make it do anything.
Not the best product out there.Martin Mills, Reading - 26th November 2011
I bought 2 Firewinders and have to say I have rarely been as disappointed in a product. Despite plenty of wind from mild to gale and different locations around the I have only once seen anything even resembling the video clips and my expectations. A complete waste.David Murray, Dublin - 25th October 2011
Firebox says: Hi David, sorry to hear your disappointed with the Firewinder. If you drop us a line on 0800 044 5010 or email info@firebox.com, we can help you out.
Gutted that my Firewinder has Died after only 18 months, lot of money to throw a way after a short time. We live in a sheltered garden so it's not been over worked....Caz, Weymouth, Dorset - 6th July 2011
Rubbish. Unless you live on top of a very windy mountain it fails to to do much. Moved to almost every location in my garden - even at the top of my 20ft high washing line it only rarely works. Disappointing.Julie Whitehead, Rochester, Kent - 16th February 2011
While the Firewinder looks like a great idea, it is not so easy to position it so that it works well. You need to make sure you place it where it will get consistent wind strength otherwise its operation is sporadic and disappointing. Moreover, I would dispute the manufacturers claim that it will work in wind speeds above 4 mph - my experience is that it won't work at all in light breezes and that you need a pretty good blow to get it moving well. Still, when it works it is great.Charlie, Surrey - 4th February 2011
I have seen these in our local town and they are brilliant! Well worth every penny for their mesmoerising effect....Pug, Wiltshire - 8th April 2009
Our Firewinder has added a bit of magic to our garden. Its reacts even to gentle breezes, the stronger gust the brighter the light - you can kind of "see the wind" - can't wait for a proper windy day now!
Superb design and very well made too.Nathan, - 4th December 2008
