Sucking a lemon and washing it down with a glass of vinegar makes about as much sense as ordering a tripe milkshake with your tuna doughnut. But what if you could make wincingly sour flavours taste deliciously sweet? It's easy with Miracle Fruit Tablets.
Made from natural berries native to West Africa, these taste-twisting pills contain a rogue glycoprotein molecule (whatever that is) that binds to the tastebuds causing sour things to taste sweet. Simply pop one on your unsuspecting tongue, wait for the freeze-dried jungle juice to work its magic and prepare to be astounded. Lemons taste toffee-ish, vinegar tastes treacly and Guinness tastes like a stouty, chocolately shake. Even sprouts seem fruity. Eat something sweet and it's like a sugar volcano erupting in your piehole. Incredible!
Each pill rewires the way your palate perceives flavours for up to two hours, so you've plenty of time to try tons of previously unpalatable things, from raw radishes to neat Tabasco. The possibilities are endless, the sensations amazing. Even foodie sceptics are going gaga over these taste-distorting tablets.
Ideal at dinner do's, Miracle Fruit Tablets are causing a major stir across the pond. 'Flavour tripping parties' - where daring epicures gather to pop pills and nosh on unlikely food - are all the rage in New York. The whole thing really is berry bizarre.
Apart from their 'look what I'm eating without wincing comedic value, Miracle Fruit Tablets can help satisfy sugar cravings without any calorific consequences.
Indeed conspiracy theorists reckon the sugar industry tried to sabotage research into miracle berries back in the 70s. But they also reckon Elvis stacks shelves in the Costco in Paducah, Kentucky, so we'll keep an open mind. Crazy theories aside, we really can't overstate how mind-blowing these strange little pills are. But, as you can imagine, demand is nuts and stocks are limited. So get ordering. Sweet.

These are great and definitely worth a try! After placing one of the tablets on my tongue I realised that even their own taste was quite pleasant (kind of like a multi-vitamin) after a few minutes of rolling it around my mouth and tongue (to maximise it's effectiveness) it has all gone, but the magic lived on! I proceeded to my cupboards to try the effect on some everyday condiments, Vinegar, Soy sauce, Jif lemon, all relatively sweet considering their usual face-wrinkling qualities (although I wouldn't recommend too much of either as it can still play havoc with you stomach). Then my little brother presented the ultimate test for these bitterness converting capsules, the most bitter substance known to most, EARWAX! I'll spare you the imagery, however upon tasting, NOTHING! No bitter after-taste, no cringing, no gagging! These tablets are little Miracles to the taste buds.Darren, Gloucestershire - Dec '08
Firebox says: Thanks for this! But its not really advisable to be eating Earwax!
The tablet itself at first tastes like some sort of freeze dried berry (well I suppose it pretty much is), but then as you continue to let it dissolve on your tongue, (this may just be me) a sort of creamy taste seems to come from the tablet.
As soon as it had dissolved fully I went over to the assortment of taste options I had laid out for myself. First up, lemon, as I first bit into it there was a hint of the acidic element that every lemon carries, but as soon as the juices came into contact with my tongue it was the detonation that caused an implosion and explosion at the same time of euphoric sugary goodness.
Its weird though, because the taste it creates isn't something that any other food stuff seems to have, the sweetness is in its own way, unique. Usually, when you try some sort of food, it reminds you of some other similar food you have had before. But wow! Not with the help of the tablets plus a lemon, they made the lemon sweet, but not too sweet that it was sickly, it was somehow just right.
Taste experiences and there similarities; Orange juice tastes much sweeter and smoother, somewhat like pineapple juice. Honey (Yes, I did decide to try making something already sweet much, much sweeter) tastes more like maple syrup. HP Sauce (Brown Sauce) tastes a lot more like sugary ketchup. Apples taste more like toffee apples. Savory things don't seem to be altered by the tablets, I think its mainly due it mainly working with acidic like flavors.
One thing to remember though, even though the tablets make shoving a couple of lemons down your throat and washing it down with vinegar much more of a blissful leisure activity than a form of torture, you are still eating two lemons and drinking a quarter of a pint of vinegar. So, you might not notice the acid in that but your stomach does and doesn't let you forget about it, I learned that the hard way. . . . It was utterly worth it though.
All in all another great buy from Firefox, these beauties can solve you sugar cravings and be a great laugh. I'm sure I'll be restocking shortly!Harry Sumpter, London - Dec '08
Firebox says: Wow, that is one great review Harry! Also, if anyone can tell us what a Pineapple tastes like, we will give you high Kudos!
I looove these! They do work. Lemons, however, did NOT taste like toffee. Just like sweet lemons.
I thought the tablets themselves tasted nice. Orange juice was SO sweet and red wine tasted lovely. I tried balsamic vinegar and that tasted niiice. Apples were like apples but sweeter. Basically, it just sweetens everything. Worth a try though! I can see these being very useful for a diabetes sufferer.Izzylizard, Kent - Aug '08
Omg, they WORK!
We just had our first taste tripping experience the day the Miracle Fruit tabs arrived, and WOW!
I went straight for lemon for the first experiment... A brief lick and then I chowed it down with ease. It wasn't like toffee nor lemonade but somewhat like a mix of the two - and no sourness whatsoever!
Lime was up next, it had an exotic taste, my other half reckons like coconut, I found it hard to describe though. Again, eaten with relish :-)
Strawberries were like strawberries, but as if dipped in a sugar glaze, and kiwi was just too much, it was like eating pure sugar; if I'd closed my eyes I would not have been able to identify it, the luscious intensity was incredible.
I did the vinegar test too, just a small amount in a glass - problem was it still smelt like vinegar... A tiny drop on my tongue and it was fairly pleasant and probably very drinkable but when it reached my throat I could feel the acidity and stopped there.
Guinness was, surprisingly, just like chocolate milkshake to me (not so much to gf though, but still very different). I'd read on Firebox that it was like choc milkshake but tasting it for real beggars belief!
Lastly, pineapple is intense, melon was like melon, and apple was like sweet apple but it may have been wearing off by then.
In the end we had to stop, it felt like we'd eaten a ton of Haribo, even though everything was relatively healthy... We didn't dare open the free sweeties Firebox sent too!
The rest of the pack I am saving for when we next have guests for dinner, for dessert I'll roll out a tray of lemons, vinegar and Marmite, and just when their puzzlement shows I'll crack out the Miracle Fruit tablets...
All in all the "Miracle" name is very fitting - buy some and be astounded!Paul S, Lincoln, UK - Jul '08
These tablets are amazing!Instantly the foods you eat go from sour to sweet. I tried it and it lasted well over an hour. I gave my girlfriend a pack and now she loves giving me head! Definitely a thumbs up in my book.Kevin, Georgia - Mar '09
I got these mind boggling little tablets in my stocking and leaving my presents I tested them out immediately. First I bit into a lemon, which was a unique flavour in itself, it was like orange juice mixed with pineapple. Next was HP sauce, tomato ketchup and salt and vinegar crisps. The HP sauce was like sweet and sour sauce, tomato ketchup was like sweet Marmite and the crisps were a strange ordeal, like eating crisps and having orange juice in your mouth at the same time. And finally firebox, I did try out the pineapple, and wow it was cringe worthily sweet, I was wincing and the pineapple was so sweet it was almost sour. Anyway, this is a truly awesome product, and after many laughs with my blind folded brother I will soon be restocking. Now where's my kudos for reviewing the pineapple! : )Jacob N, Bristol - Dec '08
This thing is amazing!! It makes things tastier. Lemons taste like lemon sherbet. Dark chocolate tastes like normal chocolate. Another thing is it lasts about half an hour. All in all these are worth every penny and I've only had one tablet!!!!Kelvin, Gravesend, Kent - Dec '08
Wow! the first product ive bought from firebox and was it impressive, does what it says on the tin.Daniel, Paisley - Dec '08
These things are amazing. Lemons, as said by someone else, taste of sweet lemons. Orange juice is incredibly sweet, and jam is just too much! Tomato Ketchup is pretty vile, mind you! Chillies make the pain sweeter - but they are still red hot.Joseph Redfern, Anglesey, Wales - Aug '08
Wow, these are pretty weird. I read about them in the news a while back but trying them is something else. It tends to effect the back of your tongue more than the front but its something you've got to try.
It works the other way too, I just burped and it was lovely!Chris Rowe, Nottingham - Jul '08
