Flip Digital Video Camera - Flip Mino

Flip Mino, 40% slimmer

If your normal home movies are about as badly put together as Pete Doherty’s tailoring, what you need is the world’s simplest and easiest camcorder. Trying to catch those beautiful one-off moments without the fuss and bother – and cost – of a heavy-duty model used to mean trading in quality footage for convenience. No longer, traveller.

Enter the bad boys of mobile movie making: the Flip camera range. They’re a pair of easy-peasy digital video cameras that have already taken America by storm. Their trick is to be like Herman Munster: simple, sturdy, and with a heart of gold. The Flip Ultra II and Flip Mino cameras are both so simple to use that anyone from 5 to 105 can be a miniature director: press the large button that says ‘on’, press the button that says ‘start’ and hocus pocus – you’re the cul-de-sac’s very own Stanley Kubrick all of a sudden.

Whether you’re shooting your dog dressed up like Yoda for a Star Wars re-enactment or simply your pal Dave falling off a fence in a priceless You’ve Been Framed moment, you’ll be amazed at how well both the Flip Ultra II and Flip Mino stand up to the scrutiny of critics. The Mino comes with 2GB of memory on board, which is enough for 60 minutes of filming at a crisp 640 x 480 pixels in MPG4 format. There’s no need to worry about the palaver of focusing – it’s automatic, and with a 2x zoom available you’ll be able to dispense with your Gaffer, Best Boy and all the rest of the crew.

The Flip Ultra II connected to a computer

New: Flip Ultra II

The Flip Ultra II is the next step forward for mini-vid cams. With more memory than its little brother, it lets you shoot two whole hours of footage on its 4GB-worth of storage – that’s enough for your first feature film! And while you’re shooting your new cinematic classic, reviewing your footage is even easier with the Flip Ultra II’s bigger, 2” transflective screen that lets you watch even in bright daylight.

You’ll be pleased to hear that just like Gremlins, the SAS and moths, Flip cameras excel in low light conditions – so indoors shooting and evening trips are a doddle to put down for posterity, even when you compare the results to cameras five times the price.

Flip Software

Screenshot of computer software

The tinky-winky wee Flip Mino has the added slinky bonus of a flat-panel control area on its rear side with touch-sensitive buttons – and beneath their smooth panel, it hides away a long-lasting Li-ion battery for real stamina. The larger Flip Ultra II takes two AA batteries for convenience while you’re away from power sources, but they’ll also accept a rechargeable battery pack that juices up via USB sockets. And as we all know, making it in movies is about unlimited power and the imagination to use it!

Flip Digital Video Camera Soft Pouch pack available

When you’re done shooting, just press stop. No clapperboards required. And here’s the really smart thing: all the Flip cameras have natty little USB plugs built into their casings, that flip out at the touch of a button and let you download your movies in a trice, with no cables to lose. There’s also no software to lose either – all the technical jiggery-pokery lives inside the Flip’s body, so as soon as it’s plugged in you’re ready to watch your creations – what the hell, even upload them directly to YouTube. This is the 21st century after all. Time to tell Beadle you’re about!

Visitor Reviews...

visitor avatar I bought my flip video quite a while back and both I and the kids love it. Even my 4 year old has a go as its that easy to use. I have a Sony Handycam which is a nightmare to operate and transfer if you want copies but the Flip just pops into the USB port and away you go. It is easy to make copies for mates on to DVD as well. I just keep mine on the top of the PC desk so its at hand for anyone to record, especially funny bits (maybe I will get £250 from You've been framed). The NORMAL batteries have lasted for ages as well not like other camcorders which just eat them. I love it, its brilliant. Totally recommend for anyone. Go on buy one today!!!!!
Sharon Bond, Plymouth Devon UK - Nov '08
visitor avatar For ages I've wanted a camcorder but was always put off by the fact that you have to record to DV tapes or DVDs, I wanted to take videos with ease and put them straight onto my PC, the Flip lets me do that! It takes 10 seconds to setup (putting the batteries in!) and a further 4 seconds to power up and start recording, it's amazingly quick and easy to use, even my mum and dad don't mind using it and they are complete technophobes! The quality of the video is great, I will never go back to using my mobile phone to capture all those precious moments! I've just come back from the British Motor Show and it impressed me so much I want to go to another show just so I can use it more! I could praise this product all day but all I want to say is BUY IT NOW, you won't be disappointed!
Laurence Adams, Hertfordshire - Sep '08
visitor avatar A great device! I never expected such a small device to give such a good quality image! The memory is more than enough and its so easy to upload everything to your computer! No messing around with CD's!
James Cooper, London - Jun '08
visitor avatar Just unpacked and tried my new flip, its so easy to use, and was exactly what I was expecting and ideal for the purpose I wanted one for. super fast delivery as usual from firebox, I will get lots of use from my flip, I have a dvd camcorder but have never been able to edit my movies on my mac, the flip is easy to get on to my mac and edit, which is great. No more missed cute moments of my son!!!! gona keep it in my bag, ready to catch every moment. Id recommend to anyone, u dont need any technical knowledge, just bung in batteries and press record-easy peeeeezzzzz, then plug into ur pc/mac and bobs ur uncle!!!!!
Melody, Surrey - Jun '08
visitor avatar This may sound like a really bizarre question, but does the flip have one of those tripod screw-in holes at the bottom?
Eve, Liverpool - Jul '10
Firebox says: It does!

visitor avatar Is the Flip Ultra ll compatible with Windows 7?
Mrs Gillian Newton, Wales, UK - Jul '10
Firebox says: Yes. The Flips are compatible with Windows 7.

visitor avatar Hi, just to say I have had my flip for a while now, and wanted to comment on it's brilliance. My friend used to be a courier & I would sometimes go with him for company. I would take my flip, as it was new to me at the time. One dark morning as we were on an 'a' road, I noticed that due to no street lights, the only other light on the road was from the oncoming traffic. So, out came flip, & lo & behold we have a view. Even playing this back later in the day I could clearly see the scene from the morning with the reflection of the headlights on the road. One word - AMAZING!
Nicola, Sheffield - Jun '10
visitor avatar Hey, I was wondering what the quality would be like to do make-up videos and upload to Youtube and what makes the Flip Ultra II cheaper than the Flip Mino?
Victoria, LaLa Land - Feb '10
Firebox says: The Mino has touch-sensitive capacitive buttons and has a slightly more slender design. It's also powered by a Li-on battery, instead of standard AA's.

visitor avatar Just a question. Why is the Mino more expensive but less advanced?
Fraser, Liverpool - Jul '09
Firebox says: It's more expensive and more advanced (because it's rechargeable and smaller, mainly)

visitor avatar I WAS THINKING OF DOING A STOP MOTION MOVIE( LIKE WALLIS AND GROMIT OR CARTOON)CAN THIS DO THE SAME JOB TO CAPTURE STOP MOTION VIDEO(FRAME BY FRAME)?
MIKE, S.E LONDON - Jul '09
Firebox says: unfortunately not, sorry!

We took the Flip Digital Video Camera to London International Music Show at Excel to test its picture quality and brightness when filming in a gig or club-type surroundings. Admittedly the audience were not exactly pushing each other about but the picture brightness is great and you can read the projection, so the focus works a treat!

PLEASE NOTE: This video is very high quality, and so will take a while to buffer. The wait is worth it!
