Sunshine, one thing we don't get a lot of in the UK, meaning solar powered chargers might seem as useful as a condom machine in a lesbian bar. But neigh, and especially when travelling, forget your old school power adaptor, pack this little blue power pack away and your phone, PSP, PDA or iPod will be just as thankful to catch some rays as you will be."Attitude - Jul '09
"Phones, iPods, PSPs - all of these can be juiced up by this gadget. Let it accrue some charge in the sunlight via its solar panels, jack it into your phone and you'll never lose your mates in Trash City again."NME - May '09

I bought the PowerMonkey eXplorer about 6 weeks ago in preparation for a trek in Mexico this July. For a while I considered going with minimal gadgets and getting back to basics a bit, but let's face it, anyone who frequents Firebox. Com isn't going to want to do something like that gadget-free, especially when those gadgets included things like digital cameras: I don't want to miss out on recording the amazing, once-in-a-lifetime sights!
Anyway, as I say, I bought the PowerMonkey eXplorer and tested out the solar panel straight away. I had heard bad things about solar chargers in general, so my expectations weren't too high, but I managed to charge the Monkey up from the 60% charge it comes with to 100% in less time than the instructions predicted! Since then I have been using the PowerMonkey loads, charging it up from USB overnight and then carrying in my handbag as a spare power source for my iPhone, which I play with all the time and run the batteries down constantly. It's a lifesaver. You can even run appliances straight off the solar panel.
Now I just have to work out how I'm going to fit all my gadgets in my bag: since power won't be a problem, I'm taking them all (even just bought a Polaroid PoGo printer to print photos for my travel journal on the go)!Claudia, Milton Keynes - May '09

You state that the PowerMonkey gives an iPod 40 Hours Maximum Reserve Power, but what do you exactly mean by reserve power? Do you mean 40 hours of standby, 40 hours of talk time, 40 hours of video playback or 40 hours of music playback?
