"For a certain generation the humble C90 is the equivalent of vinyl, only a bit less sexy...You can't beat a flip through your old mixtapes for a shot of nostalgia, but they're a bit of a faff for us with our 21st-century attention spans. Hi, since the walkman type doesn't work with windows media player does its big brother here?John, Wakefield - 19th August 2011
Firebox says: Yes it will, John!
Hello, I am using a Tape2PC to convert my rather large tape collection into MP3s. I have a question though. I am unsure whether or not to use the Noise Reduction feature when recording the tapes into my Audacity software. When I leave the feature turned off, there's quite a lot of background hiss when I burn the MP3s to CD. However, when I have it turned on, the recording seems muffled and less vibrant. What do Firebox/ION recommend? I would like to find a happy medium! I would be interested to know what feedback other customers have given - what is the most common way to deal with this problem?John Morris, York - 31st March 2011
Firebox says: Hi John, the guys at ION advise that the machine itself should not give off any sound so would not add a "hiss" during the recording process.
However the device will record exactly sound-for-sound what is on the tape, so if there is a hiss on the original it will also pick this up as well as the song and any clicks or interrupting radio DJs along the way.
If there is no hiss on the original tape then it is a puzzle and we would want to look into it for you. You can get in touch on info@firebox.com
As a complete beginner I foolishly thought I could do tape-recording by buying a tape-recorder. Am I right in thinking it's no use plugging even a re-amplified mike into this deck? If so, can you recommend an additional gadget? If not, email me if you are interested in buying a completely unused deck at a bargain price.Joe Goy, EXMOUTH - 28th March 2011
Firebox says: Sorry for the confusion Joe, this isn't strictly a tape-recorder, rather this allows you to digitise all of your existing cassettes. Do feel free to drop us an email via info@firebox.com and we can see about helping you out.
I had used the tape 2 PC for a while but have lost the USB lead. Can I buy one in PC World or the like?George Treacher, East Llondon - 9th December 2010
Firebox says: Yes you should be able to get a USB cable from most electronics stores.
Its easy enough to set up, but using the EZ tape converter it does not seem to automatically split the tracks as Firefox response to previous comments suggests it should.Steve, Cumbria - 3rd November 2010
Firebox says: Please call the technical support team on 01252 896080 to discuss this issue or drop us an email to info@firebox.com with your order details and we'll see if we can work out the problem you're experiencing.
I have used a version of this for two+ years without problems, but now - Windows 7 has stopped all that with its demands for unavailable drivers - anyone help?TrevorW, Nottingham - 1st June 2010
If you have a big stack of cassette tapes with favourite music or books on tape and you are worried that the old cassette might stick in your machine then this is the kit for you. If you want to preserve them by digitising them onto your computer it is relatively simple with this hardware. The deck gives a good quality signal (as its heads are brand new) and the audacity software for conversion to a digital signal and editing is excellent. You can convert the audio files to Mp3 and if you use Apple’s music system you can store the tracks directly your music library. The package of well adapted hardware and smart Audacity software provided a quality and value for money package.Jeff Satterley, UK - 12th February 2010
Is it capable of automatically splitting tracks on one side of a tape or can you / do you have to split them manually as you record?Jon, Bucks UK - 10th September 2009
Firebox says: Basically, if you are using the EZ tape converter, then this will automatically detect a pause and will split the tracks. Whereas the audacity software, means that you have to wait until the track is finished and then manually set the break.
Does it automagically flip the tape when you're recording to pc? Or do you have to switch the tape over manually?Steve, Birmingham - 27th August 2009
Firebox says: You'll have to switch it manually.
I bought this for my dad, very simple to set up - plug it in and it does the rest, it uses itunes and quicktime for the filing of your music. The quality is great and the box isn't as big as it looks, it's wider than it is in depth, it'll fit pretty well on a shelf.
Only one problem - after installing all the software and plugging it in my dad's speakers stopped working, eventually traced it to a setting changed in control panel options for audio. Highly recommended if you've got a load of tapes that can't be replaced.Colin, Scotland - 5th May 2009
