Great product! Works perfectly. One quick note: if you are someone who's familiar with sound editing and already have editing software, there's no need to load the included software. Windows XP (I can't speak for mac) found a driver just fine. In my editing software, all I have to do is change the record source.
I ripped a couple cassettes this weekend (stuff that has never been released on cd) and it went quite smoothly! (At least, once I found the gain control on the back. ;).DJ Empirical, Cincinnati, OH, USA - Nov '07

This is just what the doctor ordered. Having been a tape collector since the (very) early 70's I have rather a large collection of audio tapes, including a massive amount of audio books. This machine is proving absolutely brilliant in transferring them to digital. Although only owning it for a couple of weeks, it has already been worth its weight in gold as many of my tapes are no longer available in any format. Also, I have seen this product for sale else where for a lot more money. So well done Firebox for selling this great product for a very reasonable price.Tim Vanns, Watford - Sep '07
If you have a big stack of cassette tapes with favourite music or books on tape and you are worried that the old cassette might stick in your machine then this is the kit for you. If you want to preserve them by digitising them onto your computer it is relatively simple with this hardware. The deck gives a good quality signal (as its heads are brand new) and the audacity software for conversion to a digital signal and editing is excellent. You can convert the audio files to Mp3 and if you use Apple’s music system you can store the tracks directly your music library. Is it capable of automatically splitting tracks on one side of a tape or can you / do you have to split them manually as you record?Jon, Bucks UK - Sep '09
Firebox says: Basically, if you are using the EZ tape converter, then this will automatically detect a pause and will split the tracks. Whereas the audacity software, means that you have to wait until the track is finished and then manually set the break.
I bought this for my dad, very simple to set up - plug it in and it does the rest, it uses itunes and quicktime for the filing of your music. The quality is great and the box isn't as big as it looks, it's wider than it is in depth, it'll fit pretty well on a shelf.
Only one problem - after installing all the software and plugging it in my dad's speakers stopped working, eventually traced it to a setting changed in control panel options for audio. Highly recommended if you've got a load of tapes that can't be replaced.Colin, Scotland - May '09
I cannot hear my recordings when I try to play them back on my MiniMac computor. I have checked all the suggestions in 'troublesjooting' but still no sound though the troubleshooting suggestions in the Instructiion Manual appear to be for PC only. What about Mac?William Browne, Devon - Jan '09
Firebox says: Hi William - this could be down to the set up of your sound preferences. These should be set to 'Playback through Built In Audio', and 'Recording from USB'. Hope this helps!

Firebox says: Not via USB, Jonty. You need to use a cable from the line out of your PC sound card to the line input of the tape deck.
I was looking for something like this for a while but you could only get something for your PC. (I wanted something for my laptop. )
Anyway, I opened the box and saw the instructions and thought great this is going to hard to set up. It wasn't. I put the software disc in the drive and it loaded automatically. Then I plugged it in to the USB and power socket and I was away. The only thing I had to changed was the audio from Windows media codec.
I wanted it mainly to record my audiobooks. Playing them back, they were so loud and clear that I thought the reader was in the room with me.
The only problem I found was you have to be with the machine to turn the recorder off when the tape finished and you can not go on the internet while recording or the recorder picks up every bleep and sound.
Other than this I would recommend it to anyone. Just for is recording quality alone.Ginette Kneller, Leicester - Jan '08
