Freeloader Solar Charger

Charge up the Freeloader
and a device at the
same time

Running out of juice when you're chatting on your phone, battling aliens on your PSP or listening to your iPod is one of the most annoying things known to mankind. Well it’s not, but it's irritating nonetheless. Thankfully portable gizmos are rechargeable, so you merely plug them into the nearest socket and wait.

But what do you do when you're nowhere near a power source? Well it just so happens that, unless you're reading this from the Planet Onderon, you're always near a power source: the sun.

Freeloader Solar Charger

Use the Freeloader as a battery to charge a device

Okay, so it's not that near, but 93 million miles is nothing to the ingenious FreeLoader Solar Charger. That's because this smart, eco-friendly device soaks up the power of the sun and stores it for up to 3 months. You can then use it to charge up your electronic gadgets, anytime, anyplace. Think of it as a portable solar-powered battery.

Whether you're stuck in nowhereville, hiking in the wilderness or miles from civilization, the FreeLoader is a must-have accessory. After all a portable gadget minus power is as much use as a rhubarb wristwatch.

Freeloader Solar Charger

Solar Panel perfection!

Super sleek and barely bigger than a cell phone, the lightweight aluminium FreeLoader pulls open to reveal two solar panels. Simply charge it by allowing it to soak up some rays. Its internal battery will then power an iPod for up to 18 hours, a mobile phone for up to 44 hours, a PSP for up to 2.5 hours and a PDA for up to 22 hours. That’s a lot of juice for such a tiny gizmo. Once the FreeLoader has emptied its charge just power it up again via the sun. You can also charge it via USB if you're near a computer.

Freeloader Solar Charger

iPod adaptor (sold seprately)

The FreeLoader comes with various adaptors for all your power-hungry items, so you won't have to take umpteen clumpy chargers on your travels. Versatile? It really is an essential travelling companion for anyone who never leaves home without some kind of electronic gizmo. And that means you. All hail the sun! All hail the FreeLoader!

For a while I had been looking for a better way of harnessing the suns solar energy than my step-dads head (which he claims is the solar panel for a sex machine, though my mum disagrees)... This slightly sad and optimistic boast led me to think "Ooo, wouldn't it be marvelous if there was a handheld device that could charge up my i-pod"... Then lo and behold, firebox gave me the answer!! Ok, so it doesn't gather charge in the speediest of style, but it does kick out a fair bit of energy! Probably more useful as a back up than a main supply, but great if you're stuck with no power and your step-dad's balding head....

I hoping someone will buy me this for my birthday because it's too much a hassle to which on my laptop just to charge my mp3 player. I can see this useful abroad because here in UK you don't get much sun. Being solar powered, you won't be caught off guard when your mobile phone runs out.
Penny, Bristol - Jul '07

I have been looking for a device like this for so long now! It isn't the best collector of solar energy I've ever seen but it IS a great way to carry spare charge for all my gadgets in one neat shiny box.
Ross, Hampshire - May '07

A very kind person kindly allowed me to use this solar charger whilst I was camping. It wasn't a very sunny day and their were lots of clouds in the sky but it only took about 2 hours to fully charge my Archos Gmini 402 camcorder. I would really recommend this product to anyone and I am hoping to get one for my birthday.

I brought this on the whim of saving the planet blah blah and I'm impressed its so easy to use and once charged can top up a mobile phone, mp3 player, a PSP and the list goes on and on the great thing about it is all the adapters you get with the product no need to buy any extras unlike other one out there.
Andrew Joy, Bedford - Aug '07

Great, had my phone mostly charged up in about 1/2 hour from having a completely flat battery in not-the-best of light aka pouring down with rain.
Nicky, Cheshire - May '07

Well the minute I saw this product on firebox, my heart skipped a beat. I remember a long time ago when I thought how cool it could be if I could charge my Ipod via solar power and then once again, Firebox brought me joy, and what also brought me joy was the fact that I was going to Africa for the summer, and that going on a quest tp find an electric plug in the middle of the savanna would be. . Dissapointing. When I ordered the freeloader, I ordered the extra Ipod adapter in case my Ipod video didint work, but heres a huge tip for those who were in the same doubt as me, you do not need to buy it if you have an Ipod video because with the usb adaptor which comes with the Freeloader, you can plug in the Ipod usb cable which supposedly came with your ipod(sorry firebox, I may have ruined your profit from saying that. :S) but anyway, the freeloader brought me a lot of happiness, and unlimited music wherever I went. If you don't have one, buy one, it could come in handy wherever you are!
