Retro Telephones

Deal or no deal?

Back in the days when shag pile carpets were the height of fashion and the average wardrobe contained enough nylon to down a zeppelin, the only way to phone someone was via a GPO-supplied telephone.

There were no phone shops or communication companies vying for your custom. You used what you were given. And what you were given was a marvellously clunky Bakelite contraption with an ugh-ugh-ing rotary dial, shrieking bells and a dumbbell-style handset that barely balanced between shoulder and ear. Brilliant!

These triumphs of telephonic engineering are now unequivocal design classics, so much so we’ve decided to start selling the unwieldy blighters. Perfect for lovers of retro-chic hardware, Retro Telephones are completely genuine models from the 70s.

Lovingly refurbished internally and ready for use with modern phone sockets, each stylish hunk of plastic is guaranteed to bring the memories flooding back the second you poke your finger in the dial and hear that familiar ugh-ugh. You might even remember a few numbers from the good old days and start answering the phone by reciting your telephone number, old lady style.

Retro Telephones

Dialling a number on these retro phones is very satisfying

With their bone-shaking bell ringers and curvaceous geek-chic styling, Retro Telephones laugh in the fascias of modern slimline phones with weedy ringtones. They also look seriously cool in any scenario, in a dial-‘i’-for-irony kind of way. Best of all you can slam the handset down, Jack Reagan style, wind the curly-wurly cable around your hand or pace around the room gripping that walloping great base unit. Oh yes, you can also have a good old chinwag. It’s good to talk; it’s even better doing it on a Retro Telephone. Ugh-ughhhh…

visitor avatar We LOVE the phone but are unable to use it as it is completely useless when you need a touch dial phone (which everyone needs these days) It left me totally stuck when I had to make important phone calls and 'press 1 to speak to an adviser' of course I couldn't press 1, I tried turning 1 then got told 'sorry you are having trouble, please call back later' Argh - VERY frustrating! So if you buy this phone, it's advisable to have a 2nd touch tone phone somewhere in the home.

visitor avatar I had to send mine back as the bell stopped functioning. The replacement I got seemed fine but after not too long the bell stopped working on the new one too... =[ I now have 2 phones plugged in and answer the retro one but it's a shame not to get the benefit of the retro ring.

visitor avatar My old telephone was ‘retro’ in a BAD way! It was so old that it’d cut-out mid-conversation, it was a horribly dull magnolia colour and the wires were so tangled that they’d make a Rubik’s cube champion cry! My new ScandiPhone is so easy to use, I just plugged it in and instantly I could call all my friends to brag about my fabulous new phone! No more fumbling for the receiver, with the ScandiPhone you just grab and gab!! And if you’re bored you can use it to pretend you’re flying a plane!

visitor avatar Got my phone last week and it has pride of place in the hallway. My boys aged 11 and 8 love it too and keep ringing my mobile just so they can play with the dial - the good thing is you can tell when someone is trying to use the phone on the quiet the whirl, urgh, sounds all around the house. Now all I need is a funky phone book to put on the phone table with it. Thanks Firebox another must have....

visitor avatar This has to be simply the best phone ever!!! I love it!!! I bought the target one, and it has pride of place in my living room!! It is soooo loud when it rings!! Fantastic!! Although I always get the feeling bad news is on the other end of the phone when it rings!!! Must be watching too many late 70's cop dramas!!! A Firebox must have!!! Go buy one quick!!!

visitor avatar What a classic phone! Super loud bell ring, you can hear from three streets away and never have to worry about recharging the batteries again. Startling in red. Most excellent.

visitor avatar We bought the retro phone in black it's fantastic, we love it as well as all our friends. Your service is fan dabby dozy... want this phone in blue red and cream. Yeah.
Susan Smith, Southampton - 29th June 2007
visitor avatar This is just the best phone ever! It's a trip right back to the 70's - think Crossroads Motel with Meg Mortimer answering the phone! This phone feels lovely to use - I never realised how well designed these phones were. They're so comfortable to hold as your hand grips (more comfortable) the handle rather than just holding it (less comfortable). The ring sounds great - with a real resonance - no stupid noise or ringtone - just a good plain honest ring ring. The dialing mechanism is slow but who cares - there is something very relaxing about watching the dial wind back as you dial each number. Overall I love it - the phone appears as though the insides and base plate are original and that its had a brand new outer casing (I don't remember any black, red and pink phones from when I was a kid) - so best of both worlds. This has got to be a must buy for anyone who likes to spend hours on the phone having lazy conversations rather than if you need to dial many many numbers quickly (your finger would hurt from all that dialling!). Its an absolute classic and worth every penny!
