Gazing up at the night sky is one of life's great pleasures. Because as well as its awe-inspiring beauty, this twinkling mass of celestial phenomena and black nothingness compels you to ponder the bigger picture: are we alone? Who created the galaxy? Is the universe truly infinite? Did Captain Kirk really wear a wig?

Sadly we can't answer the above questions (well, except maybe the last one) but we can show you how to recreate the heavens above in all their starry glory on any ceiling or wall.

The mind-blowing Star Theatre Planetarium uses the same lens as a full-blown commercial planetarium to show real constellations in stupendous detail. Just turn the lights off, switch the Star Theatre on, then sit back and relax. You won't believe your eyes!

Ultra-bright white LED technology enables this über-advanced projector to beam 10,000 stars skywards. It even includes special discs to display both stars and delineated constellations (whatever they are), and mimics celestial movement in both northern and southern hemispheres. Simply place the little discs in the Star Theatre's front-loading tray and prepare to be gobsmacked.

As if all that were not impressive enough, you can also set the Star Theatre to project shooting stars at random intervals. Totally cosmic! Take it from us, lying in bed gawping at a mega-realistic night sky with its slowly moving stars is totally magical and seriously hypnotic. Stick on the music from 2001 and we guarantee you'll be dumbstruck by the all-encompassing experience.

Of course you could always fit a retractable roof and look at the real thing, but all those nosy aliens would see you though their nuclear telescopes. Or would they see you as a baby? Or a dinosaur? Are they real stars? I've just bought a new apartment and worried they may burn holes in my ceiling! The new place doesn't come with a force field either unfortunately (new builds eh) and so I'm concenred about the occassional gamma burst and/or solar flare! Will you stock these as I have the family over for Christmas and it will cause considerable embarrassment if I irradiate half the family (and its never the right half!) and burn Skip (my Mums dog) to a crisp!

Hi, I recently bought this for a Christmas present, had it out for a quick look and it works perfectly, looks fantastic up and running, and I was so pleased with how fast the delivery was! However, I wanted to know if you have any idea if it would work better against a black or white roof?

Firebox says: Hi Lauren, we're glad you're so happy with it! As long as it's dark, it doesn't much matter. But as black absorbs light and white reflects it, I imagine you would have a 'blacker' black with a black roof. That makes sense - doesn't it?

This is my kinda gadget, love it, but I would buy it ......only if it came with a whole load of cards supplied or @ least offered with it, otherwise it will become boring repeating the same disc, id want all the discs, and would buy in a heartbeat, I might look into the laser version which someone kindly recommended as superb, with a shedful of northern and southern hemisperes, shame cos this is right up my street, sincerely j. It is awesome and really clear. It is worth the money and good for all ages. Better in the dark and doesn't hurt your eyes. The shoting star option is amazing and if you want it go for it. ***** five star.

My sister bought me this for Christmas 2009 and I just love it. The shooting star effect is great. I went on the net to look for any other discs that may be available and I found a Japanese site that sells 3 new discs although they are a tad expensive. However, if you love your unit as much as I do you may not want to wait for the 2nd Edition Pro Planetarium that Firebox will be selling around September then these will keep you busy until then. Can't wait!!

Firebox says: The version we sell is the second version of this product. However, it is not the 'Pro2' as this is only produced for the Japanese market and includes an extra disc (moon). Our version contains a stars disc and a constellation map disc.
