TV is the greatest invention ever. That's a rather sweeping statement when you consider some of the other contenders, but you can't watch American Idol and the latest series of Prison Break on an internal combustion engine or a flushing toilet, can you?

Topfield PVR: 5810

The New TF5810:
Stylish channel button!

In fact TV is now so ridiculously entertaining, with so many fantastic digital channels, it's difficult keeping up with your favourite shows. Yes, you can invest in a Sky+ box but you have to keep paying for that even after you've shelled out for the unit itself. So wouldn't it be great if you could do all that live pause/rewind/ one-touch recording malarkey without reaching for the Sky? You can with a Topfield Freeview+ box.

These ingenious gizmos are essentially twin Freeview digiboxes and multifunctional hard drives in one. So as well as receiving loads of spectacularly captivating digital channels you can do all those fancy-pants Sky+ tricks without any subscription fees or unsightly dishes.

Using a Topfield you can pause/rewind live TV and record two channels at the same time whilst watching two others simultaneously (picture within a picture-style). Perfect if you need to pop out for a cuppa or watch that wonder goal again and again. And you won't have to agonize over which clashing shows to record; simply record them both at the same time. Amazing!

Topfield 5810 Features:

Topfield PVR: 5810 Black
Topfield PVR: 5810 Black

If you're a real telly addict (and who isn't?), you can invest in the gobsmackingly impressive Topfield TF5810. As well it's ability to upscale* broadcasts to a high resolution image, this feature-rammed box of tricks has a whopping 500GB memory - that's over 250 hours, so you can record stacks of movies, loads of series and store an immense backlog of shows.

If that doesn't impress, try this for size: every Topfield machine allows you to record and link entire series. All you do is hit a couple of buttons and every episode of your favourite show will be recorded. Just think, an entire season of Jeremy Kyle in the bag without bunking off work. It's like being in charge of your own fully-customisable TV station. Sounds good? You betcha, because an optical digital audio socket delivers Dolby Digital output for amazing quality sound.

Topfields can also be connected to your PC via USB 2.0. As well as periodically upgrading software this allows you to transfer stored TV shows to your PC so that you can burn them to DVD. You can also transfer downloaded MP3 files from your PC onto the Topfield's hard disk for viewing on your main telly. Bye, bye, social life!

Topfield PVR: 5810 Remote

Go on... pause and rewind TV!

We guarantee these user-friendly boxes will totally revolutionise your TV-watching life. Never again will you utter 'There's nothing on' or 'I think the tracking's out.' Speaking of which, you can start making room for a Topfield by chucking your VCR in the bin.

Topfields are also Pay TV compatible, so you can take advantage of the Des Lynam-endorsed services offered by Setanta Sports, which include football, rugby, boxing and various other sporting events. The Sky+ might be the limit, but a Topfield's capabilities are truly infinite.

* Upscaling is a process that mathematically matches the pixel count of the output of a standard or non-hi-def signal (such as standard DVD) to the physical pixel count on an HDTV, which is typically 1280x720 (720p) or 1920x1080 (1080i). But if you're geeky enough to be reading this you already knew that, didn't you?

Digital Switchover:
If you are experiencing problems with your Topfield and live in the South of England, please read the following:

The switchover to Digital is currently taking place along the south coast, other areas will be affected at different times. Customers experiencing difficulties (those with Topfields older than one year) are being advised by Turbosat to rescan their receivers after switchover, however this is not the whole story. You first need to do a factory reset to delete the existing channel listing, then carry out a rescan.

Customers with old software on their receivers (anything before 5.13.65N or 5.14.09Plus) will then have channels such as BBC up in the 000s, E.G. 10046. To resolve this a software update will need to be done.

As there is not an OTA (Over The Air) update currently scheduled the software is available from www.topfield.co.uk and there are full instructions available but if help is needed there is a Technical Department can be contacted on 08712 003 191

Freeview Playback:

Freeview+ adds some handy new features; perhaps the most important of which is the series record, or series link, feature. Just highlight a programme in the EPG, press 'Record' and you'll be asked if you want to record the whole series or not. If so, select OK, and the Topfield will automatically set a timer for each episode.

Cleverer still - if there are several programmes that clash, it will offer to record an alternate broadcast and if the published times are altered, it will notice that too. Again if a programme is split in half, for example a film with the news in the middle of it, recording the first part will automatically record the second as well.

N.B. Topfield firmware relies on EIT data transmitted by broadcasters. This data supplies all of the information needed by the receiver to offer series link, clashed recordings and split events. Some broadcasters are very good at this, the BBC for example, others like Channel 5 are less so. When Freeview+ Group 3 is launched shortly, it will be a requirement for all broadcasters to transmit this data for all programmes and this will iron out any glitches.

visitor avatar I’ve had my Toppy from Firebox for almost a year now. Firstly, mega speedy delivery and great service from the Firebox Team…Thank you. The item is the best piece of kit I have ever bought! That really is saying something because I’m a total gadgeaholic. I was a satellite user for many years and much to the annoyance of my supplier the plug was pulled. OK, I’ve lost a few channels but the Freeview selection gets bigger and bigger every month. Check it out the line up ain’t half bad. The user interface for the Toppy is superb. My six year old quite happily flicks through a weeks listings and marks his favourite programmes to record. I can’t rave enough about the package it is superb not to mention over the last year my £30 a month subscription charge to satellite has now been saved: £360…. Not to be sniffed at. Finally, I bought mine on the back of the reviews on Firebox and I can recommend the unit fully. Would I buy again? Yes, yes and yes.

visitor avatar What a great product. I was a little uncertain about buying this unit (I'd been trying to decide between this and the Humax), but I really can't fault it. Out of the box, it's brilliant to set up and really straight forward. However, you've just got to get the upgrade 'TAPS' on this thing. They completely change it's behaviour and make it far and away the best PVR on the market. It's fast, reliable and here, it's a good price! Go on, treat yourself, you won't regret it.
David Rensler, Derby - Apr '07
visitor avatar Very easy to set up and use for a novice like me. Very impressed with the Topfield. Really appreciated other customers comments as that helped me to make my mind up between the Topfield and the Humax PVR. So glad I got the Topfield, now the only problem is finding time to watch the programmes I record.

visitor avatar I've had a Toppy (Topfield 5800) for nearly 3 years now (before Firebox started selling it) and would heartily recommend it. Toppy. Org. Uk has lots of TAPSs (Topfield Application Programmes) and I would suggest installing MyStuff and Channel Manager as the two basic essentials to enhance the Toppy experience. We now have a massive collection of films harvested from the TV, adverts stripped out and saved on a massive hard drive. Even my technophobe wife can use it without too much difficulty.
Martin, Rowlands Gill, Tyne And Wear - Jul '08
visitor avatar My Toppy 5810 is excellent, I love the series linking, USB to/from PC video transfer and the 16x fast forward. I can get masses more channels than my PC tuner. I just need to figure out how to get MP3's to play now.
Richard, Milton Keynes - Apr '08
visitor avatar While I'm sure everything that's been waxed lyrical about this gizmo may be true, the important thing to note is that YOU CANNOT USE IT TO RECORD FROM A SKY OR CABLE BOX!
Alan, Leeds - Feb '07
Firebox says: Hi Alan - quite right but it is always good to bear in mind that you can pay for extra channels on top of the existing free-to-view Freeview channels should you wish to.

visitor avatar Life-changing, that's the only way I can describe it. Always found recording off Freeview really fiddly. Not any more. It does it effortlessly. The only drawback is you'll probably end up recording too much and not have enough time to sit down and watch it all.
Robin E, London - Jun '06
visitor avatar Fabulous piece of kit. Record and play back 2 things at once, archive off to computer (s/w for PC, Mac, and Linux on the net) and great picture quality. If you watch terrestrial tv, go get one immediately!
Jon, Norwich - Jan '06
visitor avatar Got mine yesterday afternoon after a very speedy dispatch from firebox. How cool is this set top box. Took about five minutes to set up and an hour to play with. Records like a dream. Just select the programs you want to record from the EPG and your away. Can watch two programs, record two and watch what you have recorded when ever you want. Takes a bit of getting used to being able to rewind, pause fastforward but this will definately change the way you watch TV. Copying was easy. You can download free software to rip the recordings of your box onto PC. Use some more free software to convert the file into an MPEG format. Took about 10 minutes but the output is beutiful. ***** rating.

visitor avatar Update on my previous post - you can get your progs onto a Mac as well as a PC - check out this site on how to do it: http://www.mtop.co.uk.
