There are loads of things you can hang from your keyring apart from keys: leather fobs, electronic gizmos, fuzzy trolls - the list is endless. But we bet you've never considered attaching a tree (if you have, how's life on top of that beanstalk?). For starters, trees are a bit too...er, big, aren't they? And wouldn't it be a little awkward trying to open the front door with a real tree in tow? Well no, not if it's a Pet Tree.
Pet Trees are the latest craze from Japan, and, like most innovations from the Land of the Rising Sun, they're incredibly small. Basically each Pet Tree is a real tree (well, mini-plant) inside a tiny plastic bell jar with a keyring attachment. A bit like a mini-me bonsai encased within a Lilliputian bio-dome.
Apart from a little TLC all you have to do to keep your pipsqueak of a plant healthy is water it every couple of weeks by placing the container in a saucer of water for a few minutes. As you nurture your Pet Tree it will grow inside its durable little container until it becomes big enough to be removed and planted.
According to our arboreally-aware contacts in the Far East, each supremely portable Pet Tree symbolises a different strength and characteristic, so you can choose one to suit your (or your recipient's) mood. We're currently stocking two varieties of Pet Tree: Victo, a cactus for luck and victory; and Rance, a cactus that symbolises unchanging love and courage.

Although they're only tiny we think Pet Trees are going to be absolutely huge, because having a living, growing thing dangling about your person is a strangely satisfying feeling and represents a great way to get into horticulture without really trying. In fact, we think Pet Trees make the combined efforts of Alan Titchmarsh and Diarmuid Gavin look positively pathetic. So come on, in case you haven't twigged (boom-boom), it's time to get ordering your Pet Tree or you really will be stumped!

Growing Instructions:
Victo:- Watering: Spring/Autumn/Winter Once a month.
- Summer: once every 40 days (In rainy seasons, pet trees should be carefully watered because they can be damaged.)
- Best Temperature: 10 - 30°C
- These can be grown in capsules for more than 6 months, but with less sunlight, the leaves will grow bigger. To enjoy the Echinus maximilianus longer, give it a lot of sunshine.
- Watering: Water 3 times a year but there is no need to water in Summer
- For faster growth, water every 2 months. When watering wet tissues or paper towels and cover the bottom of the capsule for 30 mins. Poor watering may cause them to grow out of proportion and weaken the plant
- During Winter, after watering make sure they are not exposed to freezing temperature
- Leave them in a sunny spot. Pet Trees will thrive if grown in temperatures between 10 - 30°C for more than 6 months
- For faster growth in the first few months, give them plant food and lots of sun, then re-plant them in flowerpots

I have Victo, and it's brilliant! I have it attached to my mobile, and people are always asking me where I got it from, and if it's grown. I think I'm going to have to plant it soon though, and I'll be upset cos I won't be able to carry it round anymore!Emma, York - May '07
This is really cute. Mine arrived early this morning. Thanks for the sweets as well. :).J, Essex, UK - Mar '07
Me & my other half got a 'Victo' pet tree each. . And people are so fascinated when I accidently on purpose cant find something in my pockets - so I get my keys out! (hehe) What an excellent idea! And what a cool and different little prezzy they'd make! Also, like to say thanks for the fast delivery after the pre-order and the Perplexcity card (still rackin' my brains now). Gotta love Firebox!Karl Mann, Coventry, West Mids - Jan '07
What a randomly cool idea - Needed something different for my friends birthday and here it is! Got to order me one!Nay, Sittingbourne - Jun '05
FAB! I got rance as a birthday present! Oh my god, soooo cute! I loved him sooo much! I carefully followed the instructions as regards watering and while I was at work he lived on the windowsil. Note I say lived... RIP pet tree Rance. He died within a month... just shrivelled up. Obviously I was devastated... I still can't bring myself to replace rance. *sob sob*. I didn't even get enough of a chance to make a film of Rance and my devil mo pod together. *sob sob*. Anyway - I'd advise anyone to get one of these cute little critters! They're Fab!!!Sally Massam, Boston, Lincs - Aug '07
These are ace - I got 3 of them in the end as the second I took it to work 2 people demanded I get them one. One major problem is that its difficult to remove the cactus from its holder without trashing it (all 3 cacti died in this way ...) but it grows so slowly that most people will never need to remove it.Graham, Manchester - Mar '07
Love these funky little trees, got one for my mother-in-law for xmas and she loves it. Only confusion is once the dome is off does she plant it with the base still on? or how does she remove it? Does it have to be broke off? Please help we are confused. .Dionne, Essex - Feb '07
Firebox says: If tree is out growing dome, the base needs to be removed before planting by teasing the soil away.
I love my new pet tree! I got a Victo for me and a Rance for my bf. I sometimes put it near my window where the sun is shining; I hope it will grow big and strong!
Only problem is, the plant looks ok but the surface isn't completely smooth (looks a bit wrinkled). Does it need more water? I water it once a week but I've got the heater on all day....Donna, Oxford - Feb '07
Firebox says: Bit wrinkly huh? Maybe try placing on a dish with a slither of water, that should iron out all the wrinkles. Try twice a week and increase if needed. Green finger goodness!
I love my little pet tree. I am a little confused about watering it though. It says for Rance to dip in water, but it also says to cover it in wet tissue. What do I do? Will a firebox bod help me please!Charlie, Essex - Dec '06
Firebox says: Hey Charlie. Sorry for the confusion. You can use either method (either dipping the base in water or in wet tissue paper) however for Rance the instructions below recommend tissue as he needs less water (being a cactus).
**the best things come in small packages**
how can such a dinky thing bring so much joy?!
love it. Thanks x.
