Chocolate Beasties
In case you're wondering if we actually test all the Edible products we sell, the answer is yes. In fact we're putting away a few Chocolate Ants and a Chocolate Scorpion right now, and we have to tell you that both delicacies are really quite delicious. Perhaps that's because these confectionery-clad critters are not just ordinary ants and everyday scorpions (if there is such a thing), and they're not just covered in ordinary chocolate.

Chocolate Beasties

Grab

Brace

Crunch!

No siree, these six and eight-legged sweets are made from genuine Queen Leafcutter ants (like the ones you see on TV carrying frigging huge pieces of foliage) and specially bred Chinese scorpions.

Chocolate Beasties

Mmm... Scorpion insides.

None of which makes much difference when you're chomping on a big deceased one that's been slopped in chocolate, but we thought you might be interested. Ah yes, and what about that chocolate? Well, the good people at Edible have chosen the finest Belgian chocolate in which to dip their creepy crawlies, making the overall taste sensation a gloriously bittersweet affair in every sense.

Chocolate Beasties

Ant-tastic

As if that weren’t enough, each giant ant has been hand-toasted by South American tribespeople to give it that extra crunch and flavor. Mmm…ants! They're even said to contain energy-boosting enzymes to keep you feeling as industrious as, well, an ant!

But what about the scorpions, we hear you ask? Well, these pincer-happy arachnids have been heat treated to remove toxins, making them 100% safe to swallow. Which is just as well because the Chinese scorpion is said to be a potent aphrodisiac when eaten.

Perfect as unusual and (t)antalising post dinner party delicacies, these tasty creepy crawlies make other so-called exotic treats look about as outlandish as french fries. So get ordering - your guests will love you for it! (Assuming you tell them what they're eating).

visitor avatar Oh I love you firebox! I've been waiting for Chocolate Ants to come back in stock for months- off to buy a couple as presents for myself now :).
Vicky, UK - Nov '09
visitor avatar I bought these for my boyfriend as a joke on Valentine's Day as he is a total chocoholic. . Problem is, he wont go near them! So they're still sat here and I tease him with them every now and then :D I'd eat them, but I'm vegetarian!
Natalie Evanson, Birmingham - Apr '07
visitor avatar As people have said, they are definitely salty, very salty. But, they are surprisingly nice, after the initial crunch it feels like you have desicated coconut in your mouth (all them little bits), and it is hard to get rid of them, but, definitely worth a try guys.

visitor avatar These ants definitely has to be one of the weirdest things I have ever eaten. The chocolate is delicious but the ant, ugh, is tastes like popcorn! Very crunchy though... Worth a try, though I won't be eating them anytime soon. :)

visitor avatar I bought these last Christmas and had so much fun with them. Christmas morning I sat with everyone's presents around me and no one was allowed to have their presents until they'd eaten an ant. Hehe everyone except my mum had a go and was pleasantly surprised, oh except my boyfriend who pulled the most amazing faces! Thanks Firebox, no ones forgotten last Xmas!

visitor avatar I have tried lots of different insects before-mopani worms, flavoured mealworms and crickets and a cooked scorpion. What makes these so different is the chocolate. Belgian chocolate on its own is already great but eating a covered ant gives it a very different flavour. I would recommend these products to anyone who doesn't dare try a insect on its own but prefers it hidden away.

Firebox says: Wow, you're obviously a bit of an edible insect gourmet Christian. We do think the chocolate helps the taste a lot.

visitor avatar These just arrived today after ordering yesterday (very fast delivery!) - firebox is right, these are very bitter-sweet! The taste is like a combination between earth and savoury dried popcorn. Though they sound quite disgusting to my surprise they are actually pretty tasty, the Beglian chocolate is niiiiice :D. Great for treating yourself to something just that bit different or for a freaky joke gift to a friend. As the ants are covered in chocolate its hard to make out all those tiny bits like the legs, but if you edge the chocolate away like I did you can even clearly see the ant's giant, stripey abdomen! Ate these all on the same day and will definately be ordering more. The first bite I took was one of the deceased critter's heads, with extra crunch. Mmmm, ant goodness.... .
